Key findings

  1. 107 minutesThe average flight time of US domestic flights was 107 minutes in the air in 2025.
  2. 133 minutesGate to gate, the average US domestic flight took 133 minutes in 2025, including 26 minutes on the ground.
  3. 66.2%Two in three (66.2%) US domestic flights in 2025 spent less than two hours in the air.
  4. 248 minutesInternational flights of US airlines averaged 248 minutes in the air in 2025, over 2,021 miles.
  5. 39.8 minFlying New York JFK to Los Angeles took 39.8 minutes longer in the air than the eastbound return in 2025.
  6. 1,890 kmThe average passenger flight worldwide covered 1,890 km (1,175 miles) in 2024.

The typical airline flight is short. A US domestic passenger flight spent 107.1 minutes1 in the air on average in 2025, about 1 hour 47 minutes, and covered 756.8 miles1 (1,218.0 km2). Yet the flight records also hold a 4.2-minute1 hop between two Alaskan villages and a scheduled flight from San Francisco to Singapore that stays airborne for 967.9 minutes3, more than 16 hours.3

Flight time decides when you land, how much of the trip is spent on the ground and why the same route can be 40 minutes longer in one direction. This page measures it in the air and gate to gate, across 8,402,8701 domestic departures in 2025, by distance, airline, aircraft, airport, state, month and route, back to 1990, and for international flights to and from the United States. It ends with how far the average passenger flight goes worldwide and what all of this means when you plan a trip.

How long is the average flight?

The average domestic flight time in the United States was 107.1 minutes1 in the air in 2025, from takeoff to touchdown. Gate to gate, the same flight took 133.2 minutes1: the aircraft spent 26.1 minutes1 taxiing, queuing for the runway and waiting for a gate, or 19.6%2 of the whole trip.1 The averages cover every scheduled and charter passenger departure flown by US airlines inside the United States, including Alaska, Hawaii and the US territories; cargo flights, helicopters and a small number of impossible records are left out.

Most flights are short. About 27.9%1 of 2025 departures were in the air for less than an hour and another 38.3%1 for one to two hours, so 66.2%2 landed within two hours of takeoff. Only 13.3%2 of flights lasted three hours or more, but they carried 19.9%2 of passengers.1

The average flight vs the average passenger's flight

Big airplanes fly the long routes, so the flight the average passenger sits on is longer than the average flight. Weighted by passengers, the average domestic trip spent 127.8 minutes1 in the air in 2025, 20.7 minutes2 more than the average departure, and covered 939.6 miles1.1 The average flight distance in the US was 756.8 miles1 per departure, and half of all departures covered less than 605 miles1.

The middle flight is shorter than the average. The median domestic departure spent 89.5 minutes1 in the air in 2025, 17.6 minutes2 less than the mean, because a long tail of transcontinental and Hawaii flights pulls the average up. One flight in ten was in the air for 37.5 minutes1 or less, and one in ten for 203.3 minutes1 or more.1

  • The median flight spent 89.5 minutes in the air.
  • The 90th percentile was 203.3 minutes, the 10th 37.5 minutes.

Distance spreads even wider than time. The shortest tenth of domestic departures covered 163 miles1 or less, the longest tenth 1,576 miles1 or more, and for flights to and from the United States the median was 1,640 miles3, almost three times the domestic median.3

In total, domestic passenger flights spent 15.0 million hours2 in the air in 2025, the equivalent of about 1,7132 years of continuous flight, over 6.36 billion1 aircraft miles.1

Flight time by distance

Distance sets flight time, but not in a straight line. Flights under 500 miles averaged 269.8 miles1 and 50.0 minutes1 in the air in 2025; flights of 1,000 to 1,499 miles averaged 1,188.0 miles1 and 158.7 minutes1. More than four times the distance took about three times the air time, because every flight spends its first and last minutes climbing and descending at low speed. That fixed cost weighs most on short hops: on flights under 500 miles only 67.4%2 of the gate-to-gate time was spent in the air, against 91.5%2 on flights of 2,500 to 2,999 miles.1 Put as a speed, the average domestic flight covered its 756.8 miles1 at about 424.0 mph2 in the air.

How flight time has changed since 1990

Flights have become longer, in distance and in time. In July 1990 the average domestic flight spent 85.6 minutes1 in the air; in July 2025 it spent 107.0 minutes1, 21.4 minutes2 more. Gate to gate, the same flight grew from 105.21 to 133.6 minutes1.1 The long series uses one month per year, July, and it has a break: in July 2003 several regional airlines appear in the data for the first time, adding many short flights, and the average drops to 87.9 minutes1. Values before and after 2003 cover different sets of airlines, so the trend lines are fitted from 2003.

What the data shows
  • Air time rose from 85.6 minutes in July 1990 to 107.0 in July 2025.
  • July 2003 fell to 87.9 minutes as regional airlines entered the data.
  • The 2020 dip to 98.7 minutes is the pandemic year.

Full calendar years point the same way, although the 2003 break applies to them too. The average domestic flight spent 86.3 minutes1 in the air in 1990 and 107.1 minutes1 in 2025, 20.8 minutes2 more, while the average passenger's flight grew from 104.61 to 127.8 minutes1.1

The time grew because the flights grew. The average July distance rose from 594.4 miles1 in 1990 to 762.2 miles1 in 2025, up 28.2%2, while air time rose 25.0%2, so the average flight now goes further and spends a little less time per mile in the air. Measured only from July 2003, after the reporting break, the change points the same way: distance up 30.5%2, from 584.11 to 762.2 miles1, and air time up 19.1 minutes2, from 87.91 to 107.0 minutes1.1

Time on the ground grew too. The gap between gate-to-gate time and air time was 19.6 minutes1 in July 1990 and 26.6 minutes1 in July 2025, 7.0 minutes2 more per flight. Ground time is everything between the gate and the runway, taxiing out, waiting in line and taxiing in, and it never shows up as time in the air.1

  • It dipped to 19.2 minutes in July 2020, when airports were quiet.

Flight time by airline, aircraft and airport

An airline's average flight time mirrors its network. Among the 15 largest domestic airlines in 2025, Alaska Airlines had the longest average, 178.3 minutes1 in the air over 1,370.1 miles1, and Piedmont, a regional airline, the shortest, 52.2 minutes1.1 Regional airlines such as SkyWest, Endeavor and Envoy fly short feeder routes for the big brands and average 70 to 80 minutes;1 Southwest, the largest airline by departures, sat almost exactly at the national average with 107.2 minutes1.

Aircraft type follows the same logic: the type is chosen for the route. The average flight duration of a Boeing 777 on US domestic routes was 264.8 minutes1 in 2025, 4 hours 25 minutes, over 2,242.1 miles1; 39.4%2 of its departures linked Hawaii with the rest of the country, and most of the others were long mainland routes such as Newark to San Francisco.1 The Embraer 175, the type with the most US domestic departures, averaged 81.3 minutes1, and the Boeing 737-800 124.3 minutes1. At the bottom, the smallest types serving islands and Alaskan villages average under half an hour: the Britten-Norman Islander 14.8 minutes1 and the Piper PA-32 9.9 minutes1.4

Why the same flight is longer one way

In the jet streams, the winds blow from west to east,5 and the flight data fit that pattern: on the same route, westbound flights take longer than eastbound ones. The average flight time from New York to Los Angeles was 328.3 minutes1 in the air in 2025, 5 hours 28 minutes, while Los Angeles to New York took 288.5 minutes1, 4 hours 48 minutes: 39.8 minutes2 less for the same 2,475 miles1. Boston to Los Angeles was 49.1 minutes2 longer than the eastbound return.1

Hawaii shows the same effect over open ocean. The average flight time to Hawaii from the 48 contiguous states was 346.1 minutes1 in 2025, 5 hours 46 minutes, over 2,769 miles1; the flight home averaged 316.5 minutes1, 29.6 minutes2 less.1

From the busiest gateway, the average flight duration from LAX to HNL was 317.4 minutes1, 5 hours 17 minutes, and Honolulu to Los Angeles 292.0 minutes1.1

International flights

The average international flight length for flights to and from the United States was 2,516.9 miles3 in 2025 across all airlines, 3.32 times the domestic average.3 US airlines, the only ones whose time in the air is recorded, averaged 248.2 minutes3 in the air, 4 hours 8 minutes, and 278.8 minutes3 gate to gate on their international flights, over 2,021.3 miles3. Their flights are shorter than the all-airline average because US airlines fly almost all of the short Caribbean flights, 239,3133 of 251,7533 departures, but only 44,5973 of the 132,6923 flights to and from Asia.3

International flights have lengthened as well. US airlines' international flights spent 219.9 minutes3 in the air on average in July 1990 and 247.2 minutes3 in July 2025, with a break in 2003 like the domestic series.3

How far the average flight goes worldwide

The average commercial flight duration worldwide is easiest to pin down through distance. The world's airlines flew 9,038 billion6 revenue passenger-kilometers in 2024 and counted 4,781 million6 passengers on individual flights, so the average passenger flight covered 1,890 km2, or 1,175 miles2.6 On US domestic routes, a flight of 1,000 to 1,499 miles averaged 158.7 minutes1 in the air in 2025.1 The worldwide passenger flight of 2024 was 235.4 miles2 longer than the average US domestic passenger's flight of 2025, but far shorter than the average international passenger's flight to or from the US in 2025, 3,249 miles3.3

Counted per journey rather than per flight, with connections joined up, the average trip was 2,204 km2 in 2024. In the pandemic, the average flight fell to 1,672 km2 in 2020 and 1,572 km2 in 2021; by 2024 it was back near the 2019 level of 1,905 km2.6

What the numbers mean for your trip

Plan around gate-to-gate time, not air time. The average domestic flight added 26.1 minutes1 on the ground to its 107.1 minutes1 in the air in 2025, and at New York JFK the average gate-to-gate time was 210.4 minutes1.1 On a short hop the ground share is the biggest: flights under 500 miles spent only 67.4%2 of their gate-to-gate time in the air, so on a short trip the minutes at the airport matter as much as the minutes in the air.1

Expect the westbound leg to be the long one. Across the country the difference is 40 to 50 minutes in the air, and on a Hawaii round trip the flight out is about half an hour longer than the flight home.1 For long-haul trips, the gap grows: Tokyo to Los Angeles was 104.0 minutes2 shorter than the flight out.3

Finally, most flights are short. Two in three domestic departures land within two hours, and the median flight spends 89.5 minutes1 in the air, so a long flight is the exception, even if it is the one people remember.1

FAQ

What is the average flight time in the US?

US domestic passenger flights averaged 107.1 minutes in the air and 133.2 minutes gate to gate in 2025, over 756.8 miles.1

What is the difference between air time and block time?

Air time runs from takeoff to landing. Block time, or gate-to-gate time, runs from the moment the aircraft leaves the gate to the moment it parks, so it adds taxiing and waiting on the ground.1

Why do flights take longer going west?

Winds in the jet streams blow from west to east.5 New York JFK to Los Angeles averaged 328.3 minutes in the air in 2025, the return 288.5 minutes.1

How long is the average international flight from the US?

US airlines' international flights averaged 248.2 minutes in the air in 2025; across all airlines, flights to and from the US averaged 2,516.9 miles.3

What is the longest flight from the United States?

Among routes with at least 200 departures in 2025: by distance, New York to Singapore, 9,487 miles. By recorded time in the air, San Francisco to Singapore, 967.9 minutes on average in 2025.3

Conclusions

  1. The average flight is short, but the average passenger's flight is not. The typical departure spent 107.1 minutes in the air in 2025, the typical passenger 127.8 minutes, because long flights on big aircraft carry 19.9% of passengers on 13.3% of the flights.1
  2. Flights are slower to finish, not slower to fly. From July 2003, after the reporting break, to July 2025, air time grew 19.1 minutes as flights got 30.5% longer, while time on the ground grew 7.6 minutes, so a growing part of every trip is spent taxiing and waiting; the July 1990 comparison, across the break, points the same way (+21.4 minutes in the air, +7.0 on the ground).1
  3. Direction sets the clock more than the season. The same New York-Los Angeles route was 39.8 minutes shorter eastbound, more than the 6.1-minute gap between the longest and shortest month of the year.1
  4. Network beats aircraft. Flights from Alaska averaged 46.2 minutes and flights from New Jersey 151.1; airlines, airports and aircraft types rank by the routes they serve, from regional jets at 54 to 81 minutes to the Boeing 777 at 264.8 minutes.1

Methodology

  • Domestic: scheduled and charter passenger flights (CLASS F and L, passenger configuration) within the United States and its territories; all-cargo flights and helicopters excluded.
  • International: passenger flights with one end in the United States; distance for all airlines, air and gate-to-gate time for US airlines only (foreign airlines report no air time).
  • Worldwide: all airlines, 2019-2024 actual, 2025 estimate, 2026 forecast.
  • State map: 50 states by state of the departure airport; territories left out of the map.

Definition. Air time = wheels-off to wheels-on minutes; block (gate-to-gate) time = gate departure to gate arrival minutes; ground time = block time minus air time; distance = great-circle statute miles between the two airports. 'Average flight' = departure-weighted average; 'average passenger's flight' = passenger-weighted average. Worldwide distance per flight = revenue passenger-kilometers divided by segment passengers.

Data sources. BTS TranStats T-100 Domestic Segment (U.S. carriers), monthly files: July of every year 1990-2025 plus all 12 months of 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2019, 2020 and 2025; BTS T-100 International Segment (all carriers), July of every year 1990-2025 plus all 12 months of 2025; BTS aircraft-type lookup table (National Transportation Library); IATA Global Outlook for Air Transport, June 2026, Table 4 (industry association).

Calculations. Averages are departure-weighted from the monthly segment rows (minutes and departures summed, then divided); passenger-weighted averages weight each row's per-flight values by passengers. Before averaging, every year is screened row by row: rows with zero distance or the same departure and arrival airport, helicopter rows, rows faster than 700 mph and rows with more than 240 minutes of ground time per flight are dropped; on domestic airport pairs, an airline with at least 100 flights whose air time per flight is more than three times the quickest airline's is dropped for that pair and year (filing errors). Time bands and percentiles use each row's average air time per flight, weighted by departures. Routes need at least 500 departures (domestic records) or 200 (named and international routes). Regions group the foreign country of each flight. Trend lines are ordinary least-squares straight lines over 2003-2025, extended to 2050: our calculation, not a forecast. km = miles x 1.609344.

Limitations. The long trends use July only. The set of reporting airlines changes over time, most sharply in 2003, when several regional airlines enter the domestic data and the international series also breaks, so values before and after 2003 are not like for like. Air and gate-to-gate times are airline-reported. International time covers US airlines only, so it understates time on markets served mostly by foreign airlines. No worldwide average flight time is published; the worldwide figure is a distance from industry traffic totals.

About the author

Capt. Helen Askew
Senior Author, Aviation

Helen Askew writes the publication's aviation coverage, from airline reliability rankings to fare and fee analysis. She flew for 21 years as a commercial pilot, the last eight as a captain, and logged more than 12,000 flight hours on wide-body aircraft. From 2001 to 2016 she flew passenger flights on the Airbus A330-200 and Boeing 767-300ER, mostly to Orlando Sanford (SFB), Goa (GOI) and Barbados (BGI). From 2017 to 2022 she flew freight for CargoLogicAir on the Boeing 747-400F, mostly to Hong Kong (HKG), Atlanta (ATL) and Mexico City (MEX). Off the flight deck, Helen served as Head of Flight Safety at Eastern Airways, where she ran the airline's safety-management system, led incident investigations and represented the company in working groups with national and regional aviation regulators. She holds a master's degree in air transport management and is a fellow of a leading aeronautical professional society. Her writing draws on primary data (regulator filings, operational performance reports and airline financial disclosures) rather than press releases. She is regularly quoted by trade and consumer media on airline safety, cancellations and passenger rights.
