A first class ticket can cost almost anything. A round trip in the front cabin from the US to Florida averaged $1,1241 as shown on September 25, 2026, while one to Japan averaged $24,5271, about 22 times2 as much for a seat sold under the same name. Across the 10 long-haul destinations where first class costs more than business, the median round trip is about $16,26112. These are commercial fare-search averages, dated and volatile: they move with every search and can change within hours.1

Business class is the more common premium ticket and costs far less, a median $4,3573 round trip across 66 countries. This page sets out first and business class fares by destination, what the federal government pays for business class under contract, what a paid upgrade costs, why premium seats carry higher taxes, and how much of their revenue airlines now earn from the front of the plane.

What a first class ticket costs

First class averages exist for far fewer routes than business class. Only 15 countries and two US destinations, Hawaii and Florida, have a published average first class round trip from the US.1 The spread is wide: Japan, South Korea ($24,3041) and the United Arab Emirates ($23,4871) sit at the top, while Canada ($9941) and Guatemala ($1,0641) sit at the bottom.

Within the US, a first class round trip averaged $1,7761 to Hawaii and $1,124 to Florida, a gap of $6522. Those are the domestic front cabins most US travelers know: a wider seat, more legroom and free drinks on most domestic flights.

What the data shows
  • Japan averages $24,527, South Korea $24,304 and the United Arab Emirates $23,487.
  • Canada's $994 is the lowest first class average, below Florida's $1,124.
  • Japan costs $23,533 more than Canada in first class.

On the shortest international routes, first class is a different product. On flights to Canada, Mexico, Guatemala and Puerto Rico, the first cabin is the domestic-style front section, and first class there averages less than business class for the same countries: $994 against $3,9163 for Canada, $2,9222 less, and the Netherlands shows the same pattern, $4,7931 in first against $5,3243 in business. All five are left out of the long-haul median, which rests on the 10 destinations where first costs at least as much as business.

First class vs business class

Why would a seat on the same plane cost five times as much? Long-haul first class is sold on far fewer routes than business: only 15 countries show a first class average, against 66 for business.1 First costs 5.8 times2 business to the United Arab Emirates and 5.6 times to Japan, but only 1.3 times2 to the United Kingdom.1 At the median of the 10 long-haul routes, first costs about 3.2 times2 business: about $16,261 against $5,112.502.

How much does a first class ticket cost on an international flight

On the 10 long-haul routes, the median first class round trip is about $16,261, the midpoint between Switzerland's $13,4571 and Greece's $19,0641. The range runs from $7,0791 for Spain to $24,527 for Japan, a spread of $17,4482, and a mean would be pulled up by Japan, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates.2 The average and the best recent fare can be close or far apart. Switzerland's lowest fare found in the previous two weeks equaled its average, $13,457, while Japan's was $6,2331, about a quarter of its average.

How much is a first class flight to Japan

Japan tops the first class list at $24,527 round trip, with a two-week low of $6,233.1 That is 5.6 times2 the $4,3563 business class average for Japan and 25.5 times2 the $9624 general fare to Japan; the second multiple is approximate, because the general fare does not state its cabin mix.

How much is a first class flight to Australia

Australia costs about half as much at the front: first class averaged $12,4381 round trip, with a two-week low of $9,9381. Business class to Australia is itself expensive, $6,8863, so first costs only 1.8 times2 as much, one of the smallest first class premiums on the long-haul list.3 No first class average is available for Italy, the Philippines or New Zealand.1

How much is a business class flight

Business class is priced on far more routes than first. Across the 66 countries with a published average, the median business class round trip from the US is $4,357.3 The range runs from $9,7893 for South Africa and $9,0813 for Croatia down to $1,0943 for Belize, a difference of $8,6952. Short trips to Mexico ($1,8553), Colombia ($1,6593) and Jamaica ($1,1563) cost a fraction of a long-haul business seat.

The lowest business fare seen in the previous two weeks can sit far below the average, for example $2,6523 against an average of $3,5963 for the Philippines. Some of those lows are below the economy fare to the same country, so they may not all be business class seats, and the table leaves them out. Its last column is a price threshold, not an average: a quarter of users found a round trip at or below it, $4,4323 for the United Kingdom against an average of $5,5513.

How much does business class cost on an international flight

On the same 10 long-haul routes used for first class, the median business class round trip is $5,112.50, above the all-country median of $4,357, because the list is weighted toward long flights to Asia and Europe.2 Europe's big hubs sit near that level: Italy $5,3653, France $4,8433 and Germany $4,7453. South Africa and Croatia, at more than $9,000, are the outliers.3

Business class vs economy

The jump from economy to business is steepest on some of the shortest routes. Business class to Canada costs 8.3 times2 the general fare, and to South Korea 8.2 times2, while to Belize it costs 1.8 times2.3 Australia, at 7.0 times, sits near the top of the long-haul routes.4 The general fare's cabin mix is not stated, so these multiples are approximate.

What the US government pays for business class

Federal employees fly on contract fares that the government awards to airlines each fiscal year; they are one-way, valid in either direction and exclude taxes and fees, so they are not comparable with the round-trip averages above.5 The contract includes a business class fare on many international routes, but no first class fare.6 For fiscal 2027, 1,8237 international markets with one end in the US, across 1177 countries, carry a business fare with a median of $4,000 one-way, against a median unrestricted economy fare of $6707 on the same markets. Market by market, business is a median 5.97 times7 the economy fare, and the program's fares, across 17,7358 markets in all, benchmark 47.8%8 below similar commercial fares.

Did business fares rise for fiscal 2027?

Mostly not. On the 84597 markets with a business fare in both fiscal 2026 and fiscal 2027, the median change was 0.0%2: 551 fares were unchanged, 186 rose and 108 fell. Country medians moved in both directions: on the 20297 German markets priced in both years, the median fell 23.8%2, from $5,250 to $4,000, while on Australia's 1097 such markets it rose 160.2%2, from $3,075 to $8,000. These medians cover only the markets priced in both years, so they differ from the fiscal 2027 country medians on the map.

When a federal traveler may fly business or first

Flying above coach is the exception for federal travelers. Federal employees must use the least expensive class of accommodation, and when a higher class is authorized the rule runs from premium economy to business to first, with much higher agency scrutiny at each step.10 Business class may be authorized when a trip outside the continental US is scheduled for more than 14 hours. On flight time alone, first class needs no coach, premium economy or business seat leaving or arriving within 24 hours of the proposed time; the other conditions in the table, such as a medical need, security or an urgent mission, can justify any class above coach, starting with the lowest that meets the need.10 From fiscal 2011 through fiscal 2020, business class accounted for about 97%11 of the cost of all reportable travel above coach, and 35%11 of business class trips were authorized under the 14-hour rule.

How much to upgrade to a first class flight

Upgrade prices are set flight by flight, so the most useful guide is what the same flight costs in each cabin.12 On four Delta departures from Atlanta to Seattle on the same day, observed about two months ahead, the main cabin fare was $22912 on every flight, but first class ranged from $62912 to $1,43912. Moving from the main cabin to first cost between $400 and $1,210 one-way, depending only on the departure time.12

Source: Simple Flying, How Much Does It Cost To Upgrade To First Class On Delta Air Lines? (observed fares)12travelstatisticsbureau.com

Upgrade offers made after booking can be far cheaper than buying first class outright. On a short Los Angeles-Las Vegas flight, an elite-status traveler was offered first class for $26.8812 or 2,50012 miles about 70 hours before departure; such offers normally run at around twice that and rarely go below $4012. Offers depend on status, route and how full the cabin is, so none is guaranteed.12

A paid upgrade also changes the tax. In the UK, a passenger who pays to upgrade at any point in the journey is treated as traveling in the higher class and owes the higher rate of air passenger duty.13

Why premium seats pay more tax

Some governments tax the premium cabin at a higher rate than economy. The UK charges a reduced rate on the lowest class of travel, where seat pitch is 40 inches (1.016 m) or less, and a standard rate on every other class.13 For flights to the US, the 2026-27 rates are £10213 in economy and £24413 in a premium cabin: 2.4 times2 as much, or £1422 more per passenger. The premium rate was £9014 in 2009, so it has risen 2.71 times2 since then, and from April 2027 it rises again, to £251.9513.

The gap between the two rates has widened. Until 2018 the premium rate was exactly twice the economy rate; from 2019 it was about 2.2 times, and from 2025 about 2.4 times.14 The same structure applies to every distance band, and a third, higher rate applies to aircraft of 20 metric tons or more with fewer than 19 seats: £1,09713 per passenger in the band that includes the US.

France does the same with its solidarity tax on air tickets. Since March 1, 2025, a passenger who can use on-board services not open to all passengers pays a higher amount: on the longest routes €12015 instead of €4015, 3 times2 as much, and within Europe €3015 instead of €7.4015, about 4 times2. The destination group is set by distance: from mainland France it is measured from Paris-Charles de Gaulle to the main airport of the destination country's capital, with 1,000 to 5,500 km counted as intermediate and more than 5,500 km as distant.1617 Washington is about 6,200 km2 from Paris-Charles de Gaulle, so a flight from mainland France to the US is in the distant group and pays €40 in economy or €120 with additional services.16

The US taxes the ticket price rather than the cabin. On domestic flights, the federal ticket tax is 7.5% of the amount paid, so it scales with the fare: on a $1,000 first class base fare it comes to $752.18 The per-segment tax and the international arrival and departure tax are flat amounts, the same in every cabin.18 UK and French amounts are shown in pounds and euros as set in law.

Airlines are selling more premium seats

Revenue from the front of the plane has grown fast. Delta's premium ticket revenue, which covers Delta One, First Class, Delta Premium Select and Delta Comfort+, so it includes premium economy and extra-legroom economy as well as first and business, rose from $11,045 million19 in 2016 to $22,097 million20 in 2025. Premium revenue doubled in nine years, while main cabin revenue rose 14%2, from $20,489 million19 to $23,391 million20.

Other large US airlines report the same trend, though not in dollars. United's premium revenue grew in every quarter from mid-2024 to mid-2026, by between 5%24 and 16%25 on the same quarter a year earlier. In the first quarter of 2025, United flew 69,00026 premium seats a day on average, 7%26 more than a year earlier. At American, premium passenger unit revenue rose 13.4%27 in the second quarter of 2026, against 8.8%27 for the main cabin.

Airfares overall

Premium fares move within a wider airfare market. The consumer price index for airline fares, which covers every cabin, stood at 256.11834 in 2025, only 1.07 times2 its 2000 level of 239.434. The index peaked at 312.70934 in 2013 and fell to 217.54634 in 2020. It has no cabin breakdown, so it cannot show whether first class fares rose faster or slower than economy.

  • The index rose from 189.7 in 1995 to 256.118 in 2025.
  • It peaked at 312.709 in 2013, 56.591 above 2025.
  • 2020 and 2021 sat near 217.5, the pandemic low.

What this means for your trip

Start with which first class you are buying. On domestic and short international routes, first class is a front cabin that can cost less than a business seat on a longer route: $994 to Canada and $1,124 to Florida, against a median of $4,357 for business class across 66 countries.13 On long-haul routes, first is a separate, scarce product that costs a median of about $16,261.12

Business class is the realistic premium choice on most long flights, and premium economy is the cheapest step up.7 In the government's own contract prices, premium economy costs 2.4 times the unrestricted economy fare and business 5.32 times,72 and federal rules allow business class on trips scheduled for more than 14 hours.10

For upgrades, timing and status matter more than any list price. The same day's first class seat on one route cost $400 to $1,210 more than the main cabin depending on the departure, and post-booking offers can fall to a few dozen dollars on short flights.12 A paid upgrade can also add tax, most clearly on flights from the UK.13

FAQ

Is first class always more expensive than business class?

No. On short routes, such as to Canada and Mexico, the first cabin is a domestic-style front section and its average fare is below the business class average for the same countries.13

Is premium economy much cheaper than business class?

Yes. On government contract fares, the median premium economy fare is less than half the median business fare on the same international markets.7

Can federal employees fly business class?

Only when it is authorized, for example on trips outside the continental US scheduled for more than 14 hours; first class needs even stricter conditions.10

Do you pay more air travel tax in business or first class?

In some countries, yes. The UK charges its standard rate of air passenger duty on premium cabins and France a higher solidarity tax for passengers with extra on-board services, while the US ticket tax is a share of the fare.131518

Are the fares on this page what I will pay?

Not exactly. The first and business class figures are averages from commercial fare searches on one day and change constantly, and the government contract fares are available only to federal travelers.15

Conclusions

  1. "First class" is two different products. Domestic-style first costs $994 to $1,776 round trip, while long-haul first costs a median of about $16,261; on Canada routes first is cheaper than business, $994 against $3,916.123
  2. The jump that matters is economy to business, not business to first. Business runs 4.5 to 7.0 times the general fare to Japan, the Philippines, New Zealand and Australia, and the government's contract business fare is a median 5.97 times its unrestricted economy fare; premium economy, at 2.4 times, is the cheapest step up.3427
  3. Taxes follow the cabin. UK duty on a premium seat to the US is 2.4 times the economy rate, £244 against £102, and a paid upgrade moves the passenger into the higher rate; the 7.5% US ticket tax rises with the fare.1318
  4. Airlines are betting on the front of the plane. Delta's premium ticket revenue doubled from 2016 to 2025 while main cabin revenue rose 14%, lifting premium's share by 11.9 points to 42.7%; United's premium revenue grew every quarter from mid-2024 to mid-2026.19202282429263031323325

Methodology

  • KAYAK: 66 countries with a business class average and 15 countries plus Hawaii and Florida with a first class average, of 175 destination pages fetched.
  • Government contract fares: 1,823 US-international markets with a business fare in fiscal 2027, 117 countries; US territories excluded.
  • Airline revenue: Delta 2016-2025 (latest filed value per year, 2021 restated); United Q2 2024 to Q2 2026; American Q2 2026.
  • Taxes: UK air passenger duty 2009-2027, France solidarity tariff from March 2025, US federal ticket taxes.

Definition. First and business class fares are KAYAK's average round-trip fares from the United States to each destination, as printed on its cabin-specific route pages ('On average, first class fares cost $X for a return trip'), fetched on September 25, 2026. The long-haul first class median uses the 10 countries where the first class average is at or above the business class average; Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, Puerto Rico and the Netherlands, where first averages below business, are excluded. The general fare is the all-cabin country average from KAYAK's route pages (cabin mix not stated), so business-to-economy multiples are approximate. Government fares are GSA City Pair Program contract fares: one-way, valid in either direction, excluding taxes and fees, available only to federal travelers; the program has no first class fare. Delta's premium products line covers Delta One, First Class, Delta Premium Select and Delta Comfort+.

Data sources. KAYAK first class, business class and general route pages (commercial, labeled); U.S. General Services Administration City Pair Program FY26 and FY27 award files, fare-type definitions and award highlights; Federal Travel Regulation 41 CFR 301-10.100 and the 2022 Federal Register rule; Delta Air Lines Form 10-K filings (fiscal 2018-2025); United Airlines and American Airlines quarterly earnings releases (Form 8-K Exhibit 99.1); HM Revenue & Customs air passenger duty rates; Légifrance (French solidarity tax); 26 U.S. Code 4261; U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI airline fares; Simple Flying (observed Delta fares and an upgrade offer, trade press, secondary).

Calculations. Medians, multiples, differences, percentage shares and the fiscal 2026 to 2027 fare changes are Travel Statistics Bureau's own arithmetic on the source values. Projections on the yearly line charts are a linear trend with a 95% prediction range, fitted on the years named in each chart's subtitle: our calculation, not a forecast.

Limitations. KAYAK averages are commercial, dated and volatile: they state no period or sample, combine all US departure airports, and can change between two fetches on the same day. Government contract fares are one-way and exclude taxes, so they are never compared with the round-trip averages. Delta's premium line includes premium economy and extra-legroom economy, so it is not first class revenue. United's growth rates have no disclosed dollar base. The Delta upgrade figures are one route on one day and one offer to an elite traveler, reported by the trade press. UK and French taxes are shown in local currency. The Paris-Washington distance is our great-circle calculation between the two airports, well above the 5,500 km threshold.

About the author

Capt. Helen Askew
Senior Author, Aviation

Helen Askew writes the publication's aviation coverage, from airline reliability rankings to fare and fee analysis. She flew for 21 years as a commercial pilot, the last eight as a captain on wide-body long-haul routes, accumulating more than 12,000 flight hours on both major narrow-body and wide-body aircraft families. Off the flight deck, Helen served as Head of Flight Safety for a major European carrier, where she ran the airline's safety-management system, led incident investigations and represented the company in working groups with national and regional aviation regulators. She holds a master's degree in air transport management and is a fellow of a leading aeronautical professional society. Her writing draws on primary data (regulator filings, operational performance reports and airline financial disclosures) rather than press releases. She is regularly quoted by trade and consumer media on airline safety, cancellations and passenger rights.
