A hotel in Japan cost about $83.981 (¥12,561) per person per night in 2025, based on what Japanese travelers themselves paid on trips that used Western-style hotels.2 A night in a ryokan, the traditional inn with tatami rooms, runs about 39% higher per person. Behind those averages sits a hotel boom: the official hotel price index rose 37.1%1 between 2019 and 2025, Japan's hotels sold more guest nights than ever, and foreign visitors now account for more than a quarter of them.3

The surprise for American travelers is that the yen fell almost exactly as fast as the price index climbed, so a comparable room costs about what it did in 2019 in dollars, even though what travelers actually spent per night rose about a fifth in dollars. Below are prices by type of stay (hotel, ryokan, business trip or vacation, star rating), by prefecture and region, by month and weekday, the trend since 2015, how full the hotels are, what foreign visitors spend, the new accommodation taxes, and a short comparison with Tokyo.

How much is a hotel in Japan?

Japan publishes no official average room rate, but its national travel survey records what residents spend on lodging on every overnight trip and how many nights they stay. On trips that used a Western-style hotel, lodging came to ¥23,2352 per person per trip in 2025, and those trips lasted 1.851 nights on average. Lodging spend divided by the nights of those trips is ¥12,561, or $83.98 per person per night, at the 2025 average of 149.574 yen per dollar. The figure covers every kind of Western-style hotel, from a business hotel near a train station to a resort, and it is per person, not per room.1 Two people at that average would spend ¥25,122 together, but that is our rough doubling, not a room price: the average mixes solo travelers who pay for a whole room with couples and children sharing one.

Booking-site and hotel-operating data measure rooms rather than people. Rooms searched for in Japan averaged $2235 a night for a double room, a price per room that leans toward the upscale hotels travelers look at, rather than the business hotels where most guests sleep. Twenty-nine hotels owned by a listed hotel investment trust averaged ¥20,5766 ($129.65) per room-night from January to August 2026.6

Average hotel cost in Japan per night

The per-person figure is the most useful starting point because it is official, national and recent. Trips that used a hotel added up to 322.8 million2 nights in 2025, counting every night of those trips, so the average rests on a very large base. It runs a little low for one reason: package-tour trips count with their nights, but their bundled lodging sits in the tour fee, not in lodging spend; that whole fee, transport included, averaged ¥6,672 over all hotel trips.2 It still blends very different stays: a couple on a weekend in Kyoto and a salesperson on a two-night trip to Nagoya are both in it. The sections below take it apart by type of stay, purpose, region and season.

How much is a hotel room in Japan in yen

In yen, a hotel stay cost ¥12,5611 per person per night in 2025 and a ryokan ¥17,511.2 For a room, search prices averaged about ¥35,392 for a double at the 2026 exchange rate of 158.7110 yen per dollar, a three-star room about ¥21,426 and a four-star room about ¥43,804.5 Those yen levels matter for the bill: accommodation taxes in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hokkaido step up at thresholds between ¥5,000 and ¥100,000 per person, covered in the tax section below.

How much is a hotel in Japan in US dollars

At the 2026 rate, the same yen prices cost less in dollars than in 2025: about $2235 for an average double room in searches, $135 for three stars and $276 for four. The official per-person figure of $83.98 is a 2025 value at the 2025 rate; at the weaker 2026 yen the same ¥12,561 comes to $79.14.1

Hotel prices by type of accommodation

Split by the lodging used, the gap between types of stay is wide. Per person and night, a ryokan cost ¥17,5111 ($117.08) in 2025, 1.39 times a hotel at ¥12,561. Pensions, minshuku guesthouses and rental cottages came to ¥12,215 ($81.67), close to a hotel, and members-only resorts ¥11,425. A paid private home (minpaku) was the cheapest paid option at ¥8,2981 ($55.48), partly because its guests stay longer, 2.56 nights per trip.2

Staying with family or friends is not free of lodging costs either, but close to it: ¥707 per night on average.2 Lodging spend here is what guests paid the place they stayed, so where an inn bundles meals into its price, they are part of the figure.

Average business hotel price in Japan in 2025, per night

Apart from family visits, business travel is the cheapest way to sleep in a Japanese hotel.2 Residents on business trips who stayed in hotels spent ¥8,2751 ($55.33) per night on lodging in 2025, against ¥15,343 ($102.58) on leisure trips, a ratio of 1.85.2 Business hotels are also Japan's largest hotel type: they sold 46.3%1 of all guest nights in 2025 and filled 75.3% of their rooms.3 Three such hotels in Tokyo owned by a listed REIT averaged ¥12,7856 ($80.56) per room from January to August 2026, under two-thirds of the trust's portfolio average.6

Average hotel price per night in Japan in 2025

In 2025 the per-night figure reached ¥12,5611, or $83.98, up 65.6% on 2019 in yen.2 In dollars the climb was far smaller: a hotel trip's lodging went from $130.10 in 2019 to $155.35 in 2025, 19.4%1 more, and the spend per night went from $69.56 to $83.98, 20.7% more.

The consumer price index tells the same story for the price of a comparable room, with a longer view. Hotel charges stood at 111.626 in 2015 (2020 = 100) and 120.1 in 2019, then fell 16.7%1 in 2020, also because government travel discounts lowered the prices guests paid.27 When Japan reopened to foreign tourists, the index took off: 134.3 in 2023 and 164.627 in 2025, 43.6% above 2022 and 37.1% above 2019. All consumer prices rose 11.9% over the same six years.1

What a weak yen does to Japanese hotel prices

Why does a Japanese hotel not feel 37% dearer to an American? Because a dollar bought 109.024 yen in 2019 and 149.57 in 2025, 37.2%1 more.4 Dividing the hotel index by the exchange rate gives the price in dollar terms: with 2019 = 100, it stood at 99.91 in 2025, back at the 2019 level, and at 79.1 in 2022, the cheapest year for dollar payers in the series.1

Prices kept rising in 2026, but slowly: from January to September the hotel index ran 3.1%1 above the same months of 2025, and from January to August 2.9% above.28 In those eight months a dollar bought 158.71 yen on average, against 148.16 a year earlier, 7.1% more yen, which more than offset the price rise for a dollar payer.10 The REIT portfolio's room rate was flat, ¥173 above the same eight months of 2025.6 No official outlook for hotel prices is published; the straight-line trend in the chart above is our calculation, not a forecast.

Hotel prices by prefecture and region

No official room rate exists by prefecture, but the government's lodging caps come close. The cost of a hotel stay in Japan for a week or two

How much is a hotel in Japan for a week

At the 2025 per-person average, seven hotel nights cost ¥87,9271 ($587.87) per person before tax. At the search-price average for a double room, a week costs about $1,561 for the room.5 Season moves the bill: a March week sits about 30% above a July week in search prices.5

How much is a hotel in Japan for 2 weeks

Fourteen nights at the per-person average come to ¥175,8541 ($1,175.73), and ¥351,708 ($2,351.46) for two people at that average; at the double-room search average, the room costs about $3,122.1 Mixing types changes the total: one ryokan night at ¥17,511 per person in place of a hotel night adds about ¥4,950.2

Accommodation taxes and official price ceilings

A growing number of Japanese cities and prefectures add an accommodation tax per person and night. Tokyo charges ¥10043 on stays priced from ¥10,000 to ¥14,999 and ¥200 from ¥15,000, and from April 1, 2027 it will charge 3% of the room charge, with stays under ¥13,000 exempt.43 Osaka Prefecture raised its rates in September 2025 to ¥200 to ¥500, now starting at ¥5,000.44 Hokkaido added its own tax in April 2026, ¥100 to ¥500, and 17 municipalities such as Sapporo and Niseko charge theirs on top.45 Fukuoka Prefecture charges ¥200, or ¥500 in Fukuoka City from ¥20,000.46

Governments' own travel allowances give a ceiling for what a reasonable hotel costs. The US government allows its travelers up to $3469 a night for lodging in Tokyo, $328 in Fukuoka, $326 in Osaka-Kobe and $321 in Kyoto, and $201 in places in Japan without their own rate.9 Japan's own lodging cap for reimbursed travel ranges from ¥9,000 to ¥21,000, a factor of 2.33.8

Hotel prices in Tokyo compared with the rest of Japan

Tokyo is the dearest place in Japan to sleep on most measures, but not on all. Search prices for a double room there run 1.781 times the national average, foreign visitors spend 1.42 times the national figure per night in the national inbound consumption survey (Tokyo's own visitor survey, with longer stays in the city, gives a lower per-night figure), and its hotels filled 76.3% of rooms against 61.6% nationally.3 The REIT's three limited-service Tokyo hotels, though, charged less than its portfolio average.6 A separate page covers Tokyo hotel prices in detail.

What Japan's hotel prices mean for your trip

For an American traveler, the numbers point to a few practical rules. The yen has done much of the work: in dollar terms the price index for a comparable room is back at its 2019 level, but what travelers actually spent per hotel night rose about a fifth in dollars, from $69.56 to $83.981, so a budget from before the pandemic needs about a fifth more.2 Timing is the cheapest saving: the official index puts August about a fifth above January, and search prices put July well below March.28

Type and place do the rest. Business hotels, where almost half of all guest nights are spent, are the low-cost backbone of Japanese travel, a ryokan night costs about 39% more per person, and outside Tokyo and Kyoto a double room in search results costs about half as much.5 The new accommodation taxes are small for most stays, ¥100 to ¥500 per person and night, except in Kyoto's upper bands.47

FAQ

Are hotels in Japan more expensive than before the pandemic?

In yen, yes: the hotel price index in 2025 was well above 2019. In US dollars, the price of a comparable room was back at the 2019 level because the yen weakened by about as much, but what travelers actually spent per hotel night rose by about a fifth.1

Which month is the best time for low hotel prices in Japan?

January had the lowest official hotel price index in 2025, and July was the cheapest month in booking-search prices.28

Is a ryokan more expensive than a hotel in Japan?

Usually yes: per person and night, a ryokan stay cost about two-fifths more than a hotel stay in 2025.2

Do I pay accommodation tax in Japan?

In many places: Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Fukuoka, Hokkaido and other cities charge a tax per person per night, usually collected by the hotel on top of the room rate.43

Where in Japan are hotel rooms easiest to afford?

Government lodging caps are lowest in Fukushima, Tottori and Yamaguchi, and room occupancy is lowest in Nagano, where rooms are easiest to find.8

Conclusions

  1. The yen, not the hotels, sets the price for Americans. Japanese hotel prices rose 37.1%1 in yen from 2019 to 2025, but the dollar bought 37.2% more yen, so the dollar-terms index ended at 99.9; a further slide of the yen in 2026, 7.1% more yen per dollar from January to August than a year earlier, has so far outpaced the 2.9% rise in yen prices over the same months. Actual spend per hotel night still rose 20.7% in dollars from 2019 to 2025.28
  2. Two hotel markets share one average. Business trips in hotels cost ¥8,2751 per person-night and leisure stays ¥15,343, and business hotels sell 46.3% of all guest nights; the per-person average of ¥12,561 sits between a cheap, full business-hotel market and a dearer leisure market.2
  3. Foreign demand concentrates in the big cities. Foreign guests took 47.2% of city-hotel nights but 12.9% of ryokan nights, and the dearest prefectures in search prices, Tokyo at $39711 and Kyoto at $39512, are the ones foreign visitors favor; ryokan remain a largely domestic market with only 38.2% of rooms filled.3
  4. Seasons cut both ways. The domestic calendar peaks in August, while search prices peak in March and bottom out in July; a July trip meets the low point of search prices, with March 29.8% above July, but not of domestic demand.5

Methodology

  • Japan, all 47 prefectures: lodging spend 2018-2025, price index 2015-2025 and monthly to September 2026, occupancy and guest nights 2015-2025, foreign visitors' spending 2019 and 2023-2025, search prices for the 12 months to October 2026, REIT data for January-August 2026.
  • One short comparison with Tokyo.

Definition. The headline price is the lodging spend per person per night of Japanese residents on overnight trips that used a Western-style hotel: lodging spend per trip divided by nights per trip, from the national travel and tourism consumption trend survey (2025). It is per person, not per room, and covers hotels of every class. Package-tour trips count with their nights, but their bundled lodging is in the tour fee, not in lodging spend, which pulls the average down a little. The hotel price index is the consumer price index for hotel charges (宿泊料), which measures price change for comparable stays and has no yen level. Occupancy is rooms used divided by rooms available. Foreign visitors' lodging spend is per visitor and trip, or divided by average nights. Search prices are average nightly room prices seen on a booking engine, not prices paid. The REIT room rate is room revenue divided by rooms sold for 29 hotels. Lodging caps and the US per diem are reimbursement ceilings.

Data sources. Japan Tourism Agency: travel and tourism consumption trend survey (2018-2025 final tables), inbound consumption survey (2019, 2023-2025), Overnight Travel Statistics Survey (2015-2025 final results); Statistics Bureau of Japan consumer price index (2015, 2020 and 2025 bases); the health and labor ministry's notice with the FY2026 prefectural lodging caps; accommodation tax pages of Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Fukuoka and Hokkaido; US Department of State foreign per diem rates; commercial data from KAYAK and Japan Hotel REIT; Federal Reserve exchange rates via FRED.

Calculations. Yen amounts are converted to US dollars at each year's average rate (2019 109.02, 2024 151.46, 2025 149.57 yen per dollar) and 2026 amounts at the January-August 2026 average (158.71). Per-night figures divide lodging spend per trip by nights per trip (domestic survey: nights and trips by lodging type) or lodging spend per visitor by average nights (inbound survey); both are ratios of survey averages. The dollar-terms index divides the yen index (2019 = 100) by the yen-per-dollar rate (2019 = 100). Annual index values are averages of 12 months; 2015-2019 are linked from the 2015-based index at 2020. The projection on the yearly price-index chart is a straight-line trend with a 95% prediction range: our calculation, not a forecast.

Limitations. No official average room rate is published for Japan. The domestic survey classifies trips by the lodging used and does not split hotels by class; business-hotel prices are approximated by business trips that used hotels. Lodging spend in 2020-2022 reflects government travel discounts. The inbound per-night figure is pulled down by long stays and is shown by prefecture only where 1,000 or more visitors answered and stays average two nights or more. Search prices lean toward upscale rooms; star averages for some prefectures rest on few hotels. The REIT figures cover one portfolio, and its Tokyo figure three limited-service hotels. No reliable price data exist for capsule hotels or love hotels.
