Insuring a travel trailer cost $5941 for a year in 2024 at one large US insurer, while a motorhome policy there cost $1,0521. That trailer premium equals 2.3%2 of the $26,0003 that the average new travel trailer sold for in 2025 at the country's largest RV retailer.
The premium is one line of a longer bill. The trailer's own price rose 50%2 between 2016 and 2022 and has since come down, a loan can run for 20 years, and the trailer's weight decides what can tow it. This page puts a number on each part, from the factory gate to the rental lot.
What travel trailer insurance costs
A 12-month travel trailer policy averaged $594 in 2024 at one large US insurer. That is the insurer's countrywide average for its own customers, not a figure for the whole market, and it is the most recent year the insurer has published. A motorhome policy cost $1,052 on the same basis, $4582 more, which makes it 1.772 times the trailer premium.1

The gap has a simple cause. A travel trailer is pulled by another vehicle, while a motorhome is driven and therefore needs RV liability coverage of its own; a liability-only motorhome policy starts at $1251 a year. The trailer premium, in turn, buys physical cover: at this insurer every travel trailer policy includes comprehensive and collision coverage, even when the trailer is not financed, and lenders usually require both on a financed RV.1
The price then moves with the state, the region and the ZIP code where the trailer is kept. Owners who live in the trailer six months or more a year may need full-time coverage.1
How much travel trailer insurance is per month
Spread over 12 months, the $594 premium comes to $49.502 a month. Next to the loan on an average new trailer, shown further down, that is small: about 15%2 of a seven-year loan payment. No yearly series of trailer premiums was found, so there is no trend line for insurance on this page.
How much a travel trailer costs
$594 a year insures the trailer, but the trailer itself costs far more. The average new travel trailer sold for $26,000 in 2025 at the country's largest RV retailer, less than any other RV type except the fold-down camper at $14,0003. A fifth wheel cost $68,0003, 2.62 times as much, and a Class A motorhome $145,0003, 5.62 times.

Travel trailers are also most of the market. They made up 67.9%4 of the new RVs that manufacturers shipped in 2025.
Prices since 2016
The average new travel trailer held at $22,0005 from 2016 to 2018, then climbed to $33,0006 in 2022. By 2025 it was back at $26,000, 21%2 below that peak but still 18%2 above 2016. The trend line below is fitted to all ten years, the 2021-2022 spike included, so it rises steeply.

Other towable RVs followed the same curve at different heights. Fifth wheels peaked at $74,0006 in 2022, and fold-down campers fell from $18,00012 in 2023 to $14,000 in 2024. Truck campers are the exception: their average rose from $14,0005 in 2016 to $57,0003 in 2025 without a 2022 peak.

Most motorhome prices peaked later and higher. The average new Class C reached $122,00012 in 2023, the Class A diesel $317,00013 in 2024, and the Class B van camper $119,00011 as early as 2021. In 2025 the retailer reported Class A gas and diesel models as one class.

What the factory charges dealers
Retail prices include the dealer's margin. At the factory gate, the largest North American RV maker took in $24,87514 per travel trailer shipped in the year to July 2026, its net sales for the line divided by units. That is 21.7%2 less than the $31,77715 of fiscal 2023 and 1.442 times the $17,30716 of fiscal 2009. The value moves with the product mix: the maker put the 2026 drop in shipments down mainly to lower demand for lower-cost travel trailers.14
Two notes apply to this series. The maker bought Jayco in June 2016, so its unit counts jump from fiscal 2017 because of the purchase, not the market.17 And from fiscal 2015 to fiscal 2020 the line was reported as travel trailers and other, a label that also named truck and folding campers; from fiscal 2021 the same line is labelled travel trailers. The fiscal 2020 value is identical under both labels, so the series stays comparable (it may still include some truck and folding campers).18

Fifth wheels held their value better. The maker took in $65,40514 per fifth wheel in fiscal 2026, above the $64,41215 of fiscal 2023 and not far from the $67,54824 high of fiscal 2022.

Volumes swung far more than values. The maker's travel trailer shipments rose from 28,29216 units in fiscal 2009 to 190,79524 in fiscal 2022, then fell to 74,99914 in fiscal 2026, 22.4%14 fewer than a year earlier. A boom and bust like this has no plausible straight-line trend, so the counts are shown as a table.

In fiscal 2026 the maker shipped fewer towables and more motorhomes. Its North American towable shipments fell 20.7%14 to 95,04514 units, while motorized shipments rose 12.4%14 to 19,28814. Its European segment grew 2.7%14.

New versus used prices
Across all RV types, the retailer's average new unit sold for $37,0833 in 2025 and the average used unit for $30,9913, 0.842 of the new price. The new average is 19%2 below its 2022 high of $45,8346, and the retailer linked the latest fall to a mix shift toward inexpensive entry-level travel trailers.3

Travel trailers are a smaller part of the used market than of the new one. They made up 54.4%26 of used RV units sold in 2025, against 67.9% of new units, while Class A motorhomes were 10.6%26 of used sales but only 2.0% of new ones.3

Prices at the factory gate since 1985
The producer price index for travel trailers follows what manufacturers charge for a like-for-like trailer, so it strips out the shift to smaller models. It stood at 102.527 in 1985 (June 1984 = 100) and 288.427 in 2025, 2.812 times higher. The sharpest move was recent: the index jumped from 203.227 in 2020 to 274.927 in 2022 and reached 304.127 in August 2026 (monthly, preliminary).

Set against 2000, travel trailers became more expensive faster than motorhomes and faster than prices in general. On a 2000 = 100 base, the travel trailer index reached 217.02 in 2025, the motor home index 151.32 and consumer prices 187.02.2829 From 2019 to 2025 alone, the travel trailer index rose 45%2 and consumer prices 26%2.

How much a high-end travel trailer costs
At the top of the range, prices run far past the average. Airstream's travel trailers start at $64,40030 for the World Traveler 17RB and reach $227,90030 for the Classic 33FB, 8.82 times the average new travel trailer. Jayco's Eagle line starts at $51,36831 for the 2027 model year, and its entry-level Jay Flight at $17,46832.

How much Oliver travel trailers are
Oliver builds its travel trailers in two lengths. The 24 ft (7.3 m) Legacy Elite II starts at $85,00033, 3.32 times the average new travel trailer, with a dry weight of about 4,90033 lbs (2,2232 kg). The 18 ft 5 in (5.6 m) Legacy Elite showed a fully booked notice instead of a price in September 2026, and the 24 ft Apex X23 off-grid model has no printed price.3536
Financing a travel trailer
So how do buyers pay $26,000, let alone $85,000? At the country's largest RV retailer, mostly with a loan: it arranged financing for 80.0%3 of the new units and 73.5%3 of the used units it sold in 2025, on contracts of up to 20 years. RV loan rates in June 2026 ran from 6.49%37 APR for borrowers with excellent credit to 35.99%37 at the high end. Typical terms are five to seven years, though secured RV loans can run 12 years or longer.37

How much down payment for a travel trailer
One maker's financing calculator assumes 15%38 down, which on the average new trailer is $3,9002. Its 20-year terms apply only to loans of $50,00038 or more and depend on credit. Every dollar paid up front is a dollar that no interest is charged on.
How much a travel trailer payment is
On a $26,000 trailer with 15% down, the loan is $22,1002. At 6.49% over seven years the payment is $328.072 a month and the interest totals $5,4582; over 20 years, at lenders that offer it, such as the largest retailer with contracts of up to 20 years, the payment drops to $164.642, but the interest climbs to $17,4142, $11,9562 more. A 10-year term sits in between, at $250.832 a month.
For an $85,000 Oliver Legacy Elite II with 15% down, a 20-year loan costs $538.252 a month and $56,9302 in interest, and insurance adds about $49.50 a month to any of these payments.
How much a travel trailer weighs
Weight grows with length. Jayco's 2027 Jay Flight line runs from a listed weight of 2,45032 lbs (1,1112 kg) to 8,65532 lbs (3,9262 kg) across lengths of 16 ft 1 in (4.9 m) to 40 ft 4 in (12.3 m). The Jay Feather's listed weights run from 4,65534 to 8,12034 lbs (2,1112 to 3,6832 kg) and the Eagle from 6,78531 to 9,79031 lbs (3,0782 to 4,4412 kg).

Makers print two kinds of weight. Dry or base weight is the trailer as built, without cargo, water or options; GVWR, the gross vehicle weight rating, is the most the loaded trailer may weigh.30
How much a small travel trailer weighs
Short trailers are the light end of the range. Airstream's 16 ft 3 in Bambi 16RB and 17 ft 4 in World Traveler 17RB both have a base weight of 3,15030 lbs (1,4292 kg), the 16 ft 7 in Caravel 16RB 3,45030 lbs (1,5652 kg), and Oliver's 18 ft 5 in Legacy Elite a dry weight of 3,70035 lbs (1,6782 kg). Fully loaded, these trailers may weigh 3,50030 to 5,00035 lbs (1,5882 to 2,2682 kg), their GVWR.
How much a 30 ft travel trailer weighs
Airstream's floorplans with 30 in the name measure 31 ft 2 in to 31 ft 5 in (9.5 to 9.6 m) outside. Their base weights run from 6,70030 lbs (3,0392 kg) for the Flying Cloud 30FB Bunk to 7,85030 lbs (3,5612 kg) for the Classic 30RB, and their GVWR from 8,80030 to 10,00030 lbs (3,9922 to 4,5362 kg). Their base weights are 2.12 to 2.52 times the 3,150 lbs of the World Traveler 17RB and Bambi 16RB.
How much it costs to rent a travel trailer
Rented from a private owner through a peer-to-peer marketplace, a travel trailer costs $5039 to $20039 a night, and most are in the $100 to $200 range. With fuel for 200 miles, a campground and insurance added, a day costs $13039 to $34539. Peak season costs 30% to 50% more than the off-season, and weekly or monthly rentals are usually 15% to 25% cheaper than daily rates.39

How much it costs to rent a travel van
A Class B campervan, the motorized travel van, rents for $10039 to $35039 a night, about $200 a night in many popular cities. A day's total with fuel, a campground and insurance comes to $19539 to $51039. Buying one new cost an average of $107,0003 in 2025, 4.12 times the average new travel trailer.
Who builds, sells and hosts travel trailers
From one rented trailer to 342,2204 new RVs a year: that is how many manufacturers shipped in 2025, 2.5%4 more than in 2024. Travel trailers were 232,5304 of them, down 2.1%4, while fifth wheels rose 21.6%4. The industry's June 2026 forecast puts 2026 at about 314,00014 units, 8.2%14 fewer.

Building travel trailers is a boom-and-bust business. Travel trailer and camper plants employed 54,95240 people in March 2023, 17%2 fewer than the 66,20640 of 2022. Employment fell from 46,99440 in 2008 to 29,21540 in 2009, down 37.8%2, before it more than doubled by 2022. The official industry also includes utility trailers and truck caps, so these counts are wider than travel trailers alone.41

Travel trailer and camper manufacturing is concentrated in one state. Indiana had 12540 of the country's 704 plants in the wider travel trailer, camper and utility trailer industry in 2023, 17.8%2, but 56.5%2 of the industry's employees. Its plants averaged 2482 employees each, against 412 in the other states.40

Put together, the numbers on this page rank the costs of a travel trailer.
- Insurance is the small line. Seven years of cover at $594 a year come to $4,1582, less than the $5,458 of interest on a seven-year loan for an average new trailer.1
- The purchase price has already come down. The average new travel trailer cost $7,000 less in 2025 than at the 2022 peak.3
- Weight grows with length. A 31 ft trailer may weigh up to 10,000 lbs loaded, against 3,500 lbs for the shortest models.30
- A trailer is the cheaper RV to rent. A night in a rented travel trailer costs $50 to $200, against $100 to $400 for a Class C motorhome.39

Why does a motorhome cost more to insure than a travel trailer?
A motorhome is driven, so it needs RV liability coverage; a trailer is pulled by another vehicle. At one large insurer the motorhome policy averaged $1,052 in 2024, against $594 for a travel trailer.1
Does a financed travel trailer need full coverage?
Lenders usually require comprehensive and collision coverage on a financed RV, and at one large insurer every travel trailer policy includes both anyway.1
What is the difference between GVWR and dry weight?
Dry or base weight is the trailer as built, without cargo, water or options. GVWR is the most the loaded trailer may weigh; for the Oliver Legacy Elite II it is 7,000 lbs against a 4,900 lbs dry weight.33

Manufacturers shipped 232,530 travel trailers in 2025, 2.1% fewer than in 2024.4
Conclusions
- Insurance is the small line; the loan is the big one. A year of cover at $594 is 2.3% of the average new trailer's price, while stretching a $22,100 loan from 7 to 20 years adds $11,956 of interest.13
- The average trailer got cheaper; like-for-like prices did not. The average new travel trailer fell 21% from its 2022 peak and the largest maker's wholesale value per unit fell 21.7% from fiscal 2023, yet the producer price index rose to 288.4 in 2025; the cheaper average reflects a shift to cheaper entry-level models.31427
- Weight tracks length, and length tracks price. The 16-17 ft Airstreams weigh 3,150 to 3,450 lbs and start at $64,400 to $92,400; the 31 ft ones weigh 6,700 to 7,850 lbs and start at $147,400 to $209,900.30
- Travel trailer and camper manufacturing is concentrated in one state. Indiana holds 17.8% of the plants but 56.5% of the jobs (the industry also includes utility trailers and truck caps).40
- A motorhome costs more to insure because it is driven. Its policy cost $1,052 in 2024 at the same insurer, $458 more than a travel trailer's.1
Methodology
- Insurance: one insurer, 2024 data, published November 2024; no yearly series was found.
- Retail prices: one retailer, calendar years 2016-2025 (all RVs sold), 2018-2025 for blended new and used selling prices.
- Wholesale: fiscal 2009-2026. The travel trailer line is labelled "travel trailers and other" (a label that also names truck and folding campers) from fiscal 2015 to fiscal 2020 and "travel trailers" from fiscal 2021; the fiscal 2020 value is identical under both labels, so only the name changed and the line may still include some truck and folding campers. The June 2016 purchase of Jayco raises unit counts from fiscal 2017.
- Price indexes: annual averages of monthly values, travel trailers 1985-2025 (2022 average of 11 months); consumer prices 2025 average of 11 months (October 2025 not collected).
- Industry counts: mid-March employees and establishments with paid staff, 2008-2023 (2023 is the newest release); state employee counts are noise-adjusted estimates (Census noise flags).
- Manufacturer prices: starting MSRP read September 25, 2026; Jayco 2027 model year; limited editions and motorized Airstream models excluded.

Fit years: new travel trailer price 2016-2025 (includes the 2021-2022 spike); wholesale per unit fiscal 2009-2026; new selling price 2018-2025; travel trailer price index 2010-2025 (after the 2008-2009 dip); campgrounds 2010-2023 (after the recession break). Unit shipments, manufacturing and dealer employees, the used selling price and the largest maker's revenue are shown as tables without a projection: a boom-and-bust cycle (and, for revenue, acquisitions) gives them no plausible straight-line fit, and a fitted used price would overtake the new price. The only official-style outlook, the industry's June 2026 forecast of about 314,000 units for 2026, is quoted in the text.
