  1. 50,243 tonsThe median cruise ship calling at US ports weighs 50,243 tons, about 110 million pounds.
  2. 114,291 tonsIcon of the Seas, the biggest ship in the US port registry, weighs 114,291 tons, about 250 million pounds.
  3. 0.516A cruise ship's weight in tons is typically 0.516 times its gross tonnage, which measures volume.
  4. 85 metric tonsA big-line cruise ship burns about 85 metric tons of fuel a day, averaged over the year.
  5. 9 metric tonsThe thirstiest large cruise ships burn about 9 metric tons of fuel per hour at sea.
  6. 48%Carnival Corporation's fuel use per berth-day fell about 48% from 2006 to 2025.
  7. $1.65 billionNorwegian Cruise Line Holdings' 13 ships on order average $1.65 billion each in contract prices.

Icon of the Seas is listed at 248,6631 gross tons, a figure that sounds like a weight but is not one. Gross tonnage measures the enclosed volume of a ship. Loaded with fuel, water, stores and people, Icon of the Seas actually weighs 114,2911 tons, less than half of its tonnage figure.1

This page gives the weight of 114 ocean cruise ships that call at US ports, as their registry records show it, then follows what that weight costs to move: fuel per hour, per day and per passenger, what a new ship costs, what a ship earns in a day, and how many people are reported missing at sea.

How much does a cruise ship weigh?

Across the 114 ocean cruise ships with a usable weight record in the registry of ships calling at US ports, the median weight is 50,243 tons1 and the mean 53,034 tons2.1 Those tons are displacement: the weight of the water a floating ship pushes aside, which equals the weight of the ship and everything aboard.

Gross tonnage is volume, displacement is weight

Gross tonnage is a unitless index of all enclosed spaces, set by the International Convention on Tonnage Measurement of Ships of 1969. It is the number printed in every ship fact sheet, and it is not a weight.1 Displacement is the weight. Deadweight is the part of that weight a ship carries as load: fuel, fresh water, stores, passengers, crew and luggage. Subtract deadweight from displacement and what remains is the lightship, the empty ship itself.1

The two measures move together. For the median ship the weight in tons is 0.5162 of its gross tonnage, so halving the tonnage figure gives a rough weight.2 The largest ships run lower: Icon of the Seas weighs 0.462 tons per gross ton, because a tall ship full of cabins and open decks encloses more space for each ton of steel.2

How much does the average cruise ship weigh?

The average depends on the fleet counted. Among ships that call at US ports the mean is 53,034 tons2, a little above the median, because a handful of ships above 100,0002 tons pull the average up.1 Ships in the sample average 112,4402 gross tons, with a median of 108,8652, across the 1691 ships that have a tonnage record.1

How much does a cruise ship weigh in pounds?

The registry prints most weights in "tons" and some in "metric tons". A metric ton is 2,204.62 pounds and a long ton 2,240 pounds, so the median ship weighs 110.8 million2 to 112.5 million2 pounds depending on the ton used.2 Either way, a typical large ship weighs about 110 million pounds. Icon of the Seas comes to 252.0 million2 to 256.0 million2 pounds.2

The biggest cruise ships

How much does the biggest cruise ship weigh?

Icon of the Seas is the heaviest ship in the US port registry sample at 114,291 tons1 and, with Star of the Seas, the largest by volume at 248,6631 gross tons.1 It is 1,196.61 feet (364.72 meters) long and 219.31 feet across at its widest, and sits 29.51 feet deep in the water.1 That is 23,3812 gross tons more than Allure of the Seas, the largest ship of 2010.2

Among ships calling at US ports, Royal Caribbean International ships fill the first eight places. The largest ship of another line is MSC World America, delivered on March 27, 2025, at 216,6383 gross tons, 1,0943 feet long, with room for 6,7623 passengers and 2,1383 crew.3 Carnival Cruise Line's three largest ships each measure just over 180,0002 gross tons.1

Tonnage and weight rank the ships almost the same way, but not exactly. Harmony of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas are both recorded at 106,0421 tons, more than Oasis of the Seas at 104,0001, although Oasis encloses slightly less space.1

Most of a big ship's weight is the ship itself. Icon of the Seas' empty hull, engines and fittings weigh 92,7782 tons, 81.2%2 of the total; the other 21,5131 tons of deadweight is fuel, water, stores, luggage and people.12

How cruise ships got bigger

Ships built in the 2020s average 134,7941 gross tons, 1.822 times the 73,9121 of those built in the 1990s that still sail to US ports.12 The largest ship of each decade grew too, from 138,1941 gross tons in the 1990s to 248,6631 in the 2020s.1

How much fuel does a cruise ship use?

Moving 50,0002 tons or more through the water takes a great deal of fuel, and the three largest cruise companies spent $3,629.9 million2 on it in 2025.2 The amount depends on whether it is counted per day across the year, per hour at sea, or per passenger.

How much fuel does a cruise ship use per day?

Across a whole year, including days in port and in dry dock, an average big-line ship burns 80.92 to 87.22 metric tons of fuel a day.2 For Carnival Corporation in fiscal 2025 that is 84.62 metric tons (93.32 short tons) per ship per day, from 29.25 metric tons per 1,000 berth-days and 2,8982 berths per ship.52 At $6105 per metric ton, that is about $51,6062 of fuel per ship each day.2

How much fuel does a cruise ship use per hour?

Averaged over every hour of the year, a Carnival Corporation ship burns about 3.52 metric tons an hour.2 Hours at sea burn more. For 201 passenger and cruise ships on voyages to, from and between European Union ports in 2025, the median ship burned 3.032 metric tons per hour at sea, or about 72.82 tons per 24 hours of sailing.11 These figures include the fuel burned in those ports, so they somewhat overstate the burn while under way.

How much fuel does a cruise ship hold?

No cruise line publishes the total tank capacity of its ships, so there is no official figure. The registry gives an upper bound: deadweight, the most a ship can carry of everything together. For Icon of the Seas that is 21,5131 tons, for Queen Mary 2 19,1901 tons and for Viking Star 3,6401 tons, shared between fuel, water, stores and people.1 Icon of the Seas runs on liquefied natural gas and carries two LNG tanks; the first one installed weighs 30720 tons.20

So is the industry burning more fuel or less? Per berth it is burning less, but the fleet keeps growing, and the answer depends on which of the two is counted.

Fuel use and fuel prices over time

Carnival Corporation burned 55.72 metric tons of fuel per 1,000 berth-days in fiscal 2006 and 29.25 in fiscal 2025, 26.52 tons less, or about 48%2.25 Its total burn peaked at 3,395,00015 metric tons in fiscal 2011 and was 2.8 million5 in fiscal 2025, while its berth-days rose from 49.9 million2 to 96.5 million5.165

How much does it cost to buy a cruise ship?

Cruise lines do not publish the price of single ships, but order values give the scale. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings' 13 ships on order carry combined contract prices of €18.3 billion10, about $21.5 billion10, or $1.65 billion2 per ship.102 The 60 ships on the industry's order book from 2026 to 2037 are valued at $71 billion4, $1.18 billion2 each, and the 8 ships due in 2026 at $6.6 billion4, $0.82 billion2 each.42

Paying for a ship takes years. Royal Caribbean Group had paid $1.0 billion8 in deposits on its $11.3 billion8 of ships on order at the end of 2025, and it arranged export-credit loans covering about 80% of the contract price of its fourth Icon-class ship, up to €2.1 billion8.8 That loan ceiling is a financing limit, not a published price. Carnival Corporation lists $11.9 billion2 of remaining payments for seven ships under contract, spread over its fiscal years 2026 to 2031 and after; these are the payments still due, not the ships' prices.52

How much does it cost to charter a cruise ship?

No cruise line publishes charter rates, so there is no official price list. What a ship earns in a normal day shows the order of magnitude. In 2025 an average Carnival Corporation ship brought in about $800,0002 a day, a Royal Caribbean Group ship about $933,0002 and a Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings ship about $845,0002.2 Over a 7-night sailing that is $5.6 million2 to $6.5 million2 of revenue per ship.2

Passengers at sea and safety

All that weight and fuel carries more people every year. Ocean cruise ships carried 37.2 million4 passengers in 2025, 1.252 times the 29.7 million4 of 2019 and about 19.62 times the 1.9 million4 of 1985 (early years count member lines only).42 The fleet that carries them is also growing: the industry's order book holds 604 ships with 193,0004 lower berths through 2037.4 The collapse to 5.8 million4 in 2020 and 4.8 million4 in 2021 was the pause in cruising.

  • In 1985 they carried 1.9 million.
  • In 2021 they carried 4.8 million.

More passengers also means more reports of crime and people lost at sea. US law requires cruise lines to report serious incidents on ships that embark or disembark passengers in the United States, and the reports include missing US nationals.26 Counted that way, the total number of cruise ship disappearances was 127 in the fourth quarter of 2025 and none in the first half of 2026.272829 The published quarterly summaries for the first three quarters of 2025 do not state the number of missing US nationals. The count covers only US nationals, not crew or passengers of other nationalities, so it is lower than the number of all people who go overboard.

What the size means for the people on board and on shore

For a passenger, the weight of the ship shows up in the fare as fuel. At Carnival Corporation each passenger carried in fiscal 2025 accounted for 0.2062 metric tons of fuel, worth about $1262 at $6105 a ton.25 Each new berth on the industry's order book costs about $368,0002 to build.2

On shore, cruise ships support jobs in every state, not only in the ports. Florida had 172,10033 cruise-supported jobs in 2024, far ahead of California with 24,90033 and Texas with 24,50033.33

FAQ

Is gross tonnage the same as weight?

No. Gross tonnage measures enclosed volume; weight is displacement. Icon of the Seas measures 248,663 gross tons but weighs 114,291 tons.1

How much does an empty cruise ship weigh?

Icon of the Seas weighs 92,778 tons empty, its displacement minus its deadweight.1

Do any cruise ships run on liquefied natural gas?

Yes. AIDAnova was the first ocean cruise ship with an LNG drive, and Iona, Arvia, AIDAcosma, Costa Smeralda and Costa Toscana followed.1213

Which flag do most cruise ships fly?

The Bahamas: 86 of the 184 flagged ships in the US port registry sample.1

How many ocean cruise ships are there?

The member lines of the main cruise industry body count 327 ocean ships with 692,000 lower berths in 2026.4

Conclusions

  1. The famous tonnage figure is not a weight. A cruise ship calling at US ports weighs a median 50,243 tons, and its weight is typically 0.516 times its gross tonnage.12
  2. Ships keep getting bigger while each berth burns less. Ships from the 2020s average 1.82 times the gross tonnage of 1990s ships, while Carnival Corporation's fuel per 1,000 berth-days fell from 55.7 to 29.2 metric tons.152
  3. Fuel is a daily bill. An average big-line ship burns about 85 metric tons a day, worth about $51,606 at Carnival Corporation's 2025 price, and the three largest companies spent $3,629.9 million on fuel in 2025.25
  4. A new ship costs about as much as the largest company's yearly fuel bill. An average new ship on order at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings ($1.65 billion) costs about as much as the largest company, Carnival Corporation, spent on fuel in fiscal 2025 ($1,808 million).105

Methodology

  • Weight and size: 187 ocean cruise ships of the big North American-market lines found in PSIX; 169 with a gross tonnage, 114 with a usable displacement (3 registry values dropped as implausible: displacement under 5,000 tons or outside 0.35-0.75 of gross tonnage). The medians are for ships calling at US ports, not every cruise ship in the world.
  • Fuel per day: Carnival Corporation fiscal 2019 and 2025, Royal Caribbean Group and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings fourth quarter 2025 and 2026 guidance; fleet averages over all days.
  • Fuel per hour: 201 passenger and cruise ships (174 of them flagged as cruise ships) with at least 1,000 hours at sea in the EU MRV 2025 file; the reported fuel covers voyages to, from and between EU ports and time in those ports.
  • Fuel over time: Carnival Corporation fiscal 2003-2025; fuel expense 2007-2025.
  • Safety: reported incidents for 2025 Q1 to 2026 Q2; missing US nationals by quarter only for 2025 Q4 to 2026 Q2 (not stated in the 2025 Q1-Q3 reproductions).

Definition. Weight is displacement: the weight of the ship and everything aboard, as recorded in the US Coast Guard's Port State Information Exchange (PSIX) registry for ships that call at US ports. The registry labels most displacement values "Ton" and some "Metric Ton"; both are shown as tons, and pounds are given for both a metric ton (2,204.62 lb) and a long ton (2,240 lb). Deadweight is the load a ship can carry; lightship = displacement minus deadweight. Gross tonnage is the unitless volume index of the 1969 IMO Tonnage Convention and is not a weight. Fuel is in metric tons as the companies and the EU report it.

Data sources. US Coast Guard PSIX vessel records (187 cruise ships queried September 25, 2026); Carnival Corporation & plc, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. Form 10-K filings, earnings releases and SEC company facts; European Maritime Safety Agency EU MRV publication for 2025 (version 58); Cruise Lines International Association 2026 State of the Cruise Industry and Tourism Economics' 2024 US economic contribution report (industry sources); MSC Cruises' delivery release for MSC World America; MEYER WERFT and Meyer Turku ship pages. Secondary, labelled in the reference list: the US Department of Transportation's Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act figures as reproduced by Cruise Law News (the official files return 403), and Cruise Industry News for Icon of the Seas' LNG tanks.

Calculations. Lightship, pounds, ratios, per-ship-day fuel (company tons / days / ships, or tons per 1,000 berth-days x berths per ship), fuel per hour at sea (fuel / hours at sea), per-ship order averages and revenue per ship-day (revenue / capacity days x berths per ship) are Travel Statistics Bureau arithmetic. Projections on the yearly line charts are a linear trend with a 95% prediction range to 2050: our calculation, not a forecast. Fit ranges: fuel cost per metric ton 2003-2025; passengers 1985-2025 (including the 2020-2021 pause and the 2016 series break); berths per ship 2018-2026. Fuel per berth-day, fuel per passenger, total fuel and fuel expense are tables without a projection: a straight line through their decline heads toward zero, and the 2020-2021 pause breaks any fit.

Limitations. The registry does not say which ton each displacement uses, so pounds are given as a range. European-only ships are thinly covered by PSIX. The EU fuel-per-hour ratio includes fuel burned in port and therefore overstates the burn while under way. No cruise line publishes total fuel-tank capacity, refuelling frequency, anchor weights, single-ship prices or charter rates. The export-credit loan for Royal Caribbean's fourth Icon-class ship is a financing limit, not a price, and Carnival Corporation's commitments are remaining payments, not prices. Incident counts are allegations reported, not convictions, and missing US nationals exclude crew and other nationalities.

About the author

Anneliese Kurz
Lead Analyst, Hotels and Hospitality

Anneliese Kurz analyzes hotel pricing, occupancy trends, loyalty-program value and the economics of the lodging sector. A graduate of one of Europe's leading hospitality business schools, she began her career in front-of-house operations before moving into revenue management, where she built demand-forecasting models for luxury and midscale properties. She rose to Vice President of Revenue Management for an international hotel group with more than 400 properties, overseeing pricing strategy across Europe, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific. During that period she led the group's response to two major demand shocks and developed the internal benchmarking system still used to compare property performance against market data. Anneliese holds a professional certification in hotel-industry analytics and has lectured on revenue strategy at her alma mater and at industry conferences. Her analyses rely on industry benchmark data, public company filings and her own modeling, with methodology disclosed on every piece.
