How much is a cruise? Across the three big US-listed cruise groups, passengers paid an average of $197123 per person per day for the cruise, including port taxes and any air sold by the line, in fiscal 2025, or about $1,3824 for a typical 7-day sailing.5 Add what they spent on board, from drinks and Wi-Fi to excursions and the casino, and the average rises to $2934 a day. Individual fares scatter widely around both figures, by route, cabin, season and line.

The advertised price is lower: the cheapest published 7-night Caribbean fare on one major line started at $2316 per person, or $334 a night, before taxes, port fees, gratuities and extras. This page sets out both numbers, prices every add-on, from gratuities and drinks to port taxes, parking, insurance and excursions, and closes with the industry figures behind the fares.

How much a cruise costs per person, per day

Cruise fares are set sailing by sailing, so the most complete measure of what cruisers actually pay is the ticket revenue the big listed cruise groups report, divided by the days their passengers spent on board. In fiscal 2025 that came to $171.281 per passenger cruise day at Carnival, $213.862 at Royal Caribbean and $264.563 at Norwegian; weighted by passenger days, the three average $197.424. That is the price of the cruise itself, spread across every cabin, sailing and season the three groups sold during the year.

How much cruise tickets cost per person over a whole trip follows from that rate: at 7.0 days, the global average cruise length in 2025, the ticket comes to about $1,382 each.5 Ticket revenue covers the cruise fare plus any air and transfers sold by the line and the port fees and taxes it collects, before travel-agent commissions.1 It averages every cabin and itinerary sold, from inside cabins to suites, and Carnival carries about 55% of the three groups' combined passenger days, so the average leans toward mainstream fares.4

In money terms, the three groups booked $36,621.7 million4 of ticket revenue in fiscal 2025 over 185.5 million passenger cruise days, and Carnival alone accounted for $17,419 million of it.1

Onboard spending is the second half of the bill. The three groups took in $90.481 per passenger day in onboard and other revenue at Carnival, $92.602 at Royal Caribbean and $124.213 at Norwegian in fiscal 2025.4 Counting the fare and everything bought on board, revenue per passenger day averaged $293.184, or $2,0524 over 7 days.

What the data shows
  • Norwegian takes in the most on board, $124.21 a day.
  • Royal Caribbean and Carnival sit $2.12 apart.
  • Norwegian collects $31.61 a day more than Royal Caribbean.

Onboard sales make up roughly a third of what the lines take in. At Carnival, passenger tickets were 65.4% of fiscal 2025 revenue and onboard and other revenue 34.6%1; Royal Caribbean's split was 69.8% to 30.2%2, and Norwegian's 68.0% to 32.0%3. The shares have barely moved from one year to the next.

For a traveler, the practical reading is simple: onboard spending adds about 49%4 to the ticket price on average, since total revenue per passenger day ran $95.76 above ticket revenue across the three groups.4 The figure is an average across all passengers, so it blends travelers who buy little on board with those who buy drinks packages, specialty dining and Wi-Fi.

What the lines keep is a different number again. Net yield is revenue after travel-agent commissions, air and onboard costs, divided by available berth days, which count two berths per cabin rather than the passengers actually aboard. It is a margin, not a price: in fiscal 2025 it came to $209.721 per berth day at Carnival, $273.512 at Royal Caribbean and $301.103 at Norwegian.

What the data shows
  • Norwegian keeps the most, $301.10 per berth day.
  • Carnival's $209.72 is $91.38 below Norwegian's.
  • Royal Caribbean keeps $273.51 per berth day.

Running the ships takes most of what is left. Net cruise costs excluding fuel came to $116.991 per berth day at Carnival, $127.572 at Royal Caribbean and $161.693 at Norwegian in fiscal 2025. Gross margin yield, the margin left after ship operating costs and depreciation, was $81.72, $133.77 and $134.50 per berth day respectively.123

Fuel alone cost Carnival about $17.814 per berth day in fiscal 2025, at 29.2 metric tons per 1,000 berth days and $610 a ton.1 None of these cost figures is a price a passenger pays; they show how much of each berth day goes to running the ship, so that net yield is not mistaken for a fare.

Prices have risen since before the pandemic, though modestly at the mainstream end. Carnival's ticket revenue per passenger day went from $150.997 in fiscal 2019 to $171.28 in fiscal 2025, up 13.4%4 before inflation.1 Its net yield dipped from $178.59 in 2019 to $177.34 in 2023, then climbed to $209.72 by 2025.8 Over the same years Carnival's passenger cruise days grew from 93.4 million to 101.7 million, so the higher daily rate came with more passengers, not fewer.1

Advertised fares, cabins and group size

The fares shoppers see first are lead-in prices: the lowest available cabin, per person, based on two sharing, before taxes, fees and port expenses.6 On one major line's 7-night Caribbean page in September 2026, lead-ins ran from $231 for a Caribbean sailing from Miami to $9196 for one from the New York area. At the bottom of that range the fare works out to $33 a night; at the top, $1314 a night.

How much a Caribbean cruise costs therefore depends heavily on the departure port and the ship, even at the same length.6 The $688 gap between the cheapest and the dearest route on the same page is larger than the lowest fare itself.4 Every one of these is a price for the lowest cabin category, so a balcony or suite on the same sailing costs more.6

What the data shows
  • The cheapest lead-in, from Miami, is $231.
  • The New York-area sailing's $919 is $688 more.
  • Galveston's Western Caribbean fare starts at $423.

A lead-in is also only the starting point of the bill. On one sample booking, $201.48 in taxes and fees came on top of a $646 advertised fare, about 31%4 more, before a single drink or excursion.9

Cabin choice moves the price as much as the route. On Carnival's 4-day Bahamas sailings, interior cabins started at $32910 per person and balconies at $54910; per day, interiors ran about $40 to $90 and ocean-view or balcony cabins about $100 to $200.10

How much a cruise to the Bahamas costs also includes a government departure and tourism charge of about $3011 per passenger, set out in the port-fee section below.

The fare is quoted per person, so group costs scale with head count. How much a 1-week cruise costs at the average ticket rate is about $1,382 per person.4

How much a cruise costs for 2 people at that rate is about $2,7644 for 7 days, before any extras. Couples and pairs are a big share of the market: one in three cruisers travels in a party of two, and another third in a group of three or four.5 Solo travelers are only 7% of cruisers,5 which matters because advertised fares assume two people sharing a cabin.6

  • Groups of 5 to 10 make up 18%.

Long voyages, river and luxury cruises

Longer and smaller-ship cruises price by the voyage, and the totals climb quickly. How much a river cruise costs in the United States shows in one line's standard 9-day river cruises, which start at $5,99012 to $8,39512 per person, or up to about $9334 a day. The rate per day is highest on the shortest of these trips, not the longest: the 9-day cruise's top fare works out to more a day than the 52-day voyage.4

How much American Cruise Lines costs per person rises with length: its 52-day Great United States cruise starts at $45,64512, about $8784 a day, and a 60-day sailing in August 2026 starts at $51,00012.

How much a luxury cruise costs shows in one line's newest ship: 10- to 15-night sailings on Seven Seas Prestige start at $6,49913 per guest in a veranda suite. Over 10 to 15 nights, that entry fare works out to between $4334 and $6504 a night.

How much a world cruise costs is best shown by a 154-night voyage that left in January 2026: its 2023 launch fare started at $94,99913 per person, or about $6174 a night. No full-time residence fare was found, so how much it costs to live on a cruise ship full-time can only be judged from the long voyages above, at $617 a night to $878 a day.4

How much a European river cruise costs is harder to pin down, because river lines do not publish an average fare. The closest figure comes from Viking, which sails rivers and oceans: its net yield was $58314 per passenger cruise day in 2025, and advance bookings for 2026 came to $85914 per passenger cruise day, 6% more than for 2025 at the same point.

Net yield is what the line keeps after commissions and other costs, so passengers pay more than this each day. Even so, it is about 2.954 times the $197 mainstream average ticket revenue.

Cruise cost by destination

Where people cruise shapes both the fare and the extra charges. The Caribbean, Bahamas and Bermuda region carried 16.27 million5 passengers in 2025, about 2.734 times the Mediterranean's 5.96 million, while Alaska carried 1.70 million5. Together, those three regions carried about 64%4 of the 37.2 million ocean cruisers of 2025.

Each region draws on different markets. Americans made up 86.7%5 of Caribbean cruisers in 2025, Canadians 3.9% and UK and Irish travelers 2.1%, and 84.9% of Canadian cruisers sailed from US ports that year.5

How much an Alaskan cruise costs goes beyond the fare: every passenger pays Alaska's $34.5015 state excise tax, and port towns add their own charges, $8.0016 in Juneau, $13.0017 in Ketchikan for a docked ship and $2.3018 in Skagway. A cruise calling at all three ports carries up to $57.804 a person in state and local charges before any municipal credit against the state tax. The state tax was cut to $34.50 in 2011 from $46.00 and has stayed there through 2026.15

How much a cruise to Hawaii costs is driven mostly by length: Hawaii cruises averaged about 11.4 days in 2025, against the 7.0-day global average, while Caribbean sailings averaged about 6.3 days and Alaska about 7.7.5 US capacity also shifted between regions in 2024, growing fastest in the southern US, by 18.2%.19 Hawaii's own capacity rose 3.5% in 2024, to 2,453 thousand available passenger cruise days, while the Mexico and US West routes lost 6.9%.19 Longer sailings mean more days of gratuities, drinks and Wi-Fi as well as a higher fare, so a long itinerary multiplies every daily cost on this page.

Port fees and taxes

Taxes, fees and port expenses are billed on top of the fare and vary by sailing; on one sample 3-day Bahamas cruise they came to $86.649 per person. How much port fees and taxes cost on a cruise depends on where it calls: government charges alone ranged from $2.30 a passenger in Skagway to $34.50 for Alaska's state tax, a spread of $32.204. The charges are levied per voyage, per call or per day, so they are not strictly comparable.4

Some rules raise costs without a line on the bill. Norway requires ships under 10,000 gross tons to run zero-emission in its World Heritage fjords from January 1, 2026, and gives larger ships until January 1, 2032, with shore power required.20 It is a cost for the lines, not a passenger fee added to the bill.

The Bahamas stacks several levies. The departure tax is $23.0011 for a harbor departure, or $25.00 when a ship calls only at a private island, plus a $5.00 sustainability levy and a $2.00 enhancement levy, for a typical $30.00 in Nassau or Freeport and $32.00 on a private-island-only trip. The private-island total is higher only because the departure tax rises by $2.00 when no other Bahamas port is visited.11

How much a cruise to Mexico costs in port taxes is changing fast. Mexico's cruise passenger charge, collected at Cozumel and other ports, started at $5.0024 per passenger in July 2025, doubled to $10.00 in August 2026, and is scheduled to reach $15.00 in July 2027 and $21.0024 in August 2028, 4.24 times its starting level. The charge is levied per passenger per call, so the rate in force on the day of the call is the one that applies.24

How much a Mediterranean cruise costs includes local charges that vary by port and season. Barcelona charges EUR 11.00 per passenger, about $12.61, and has proposed raising the city's part to EUR 24.00.23 Amsterdam's day tourist tax is EUR 15.00 per passenger per day in 2026, up from EUR 14.5022.

In Venice, cruise passengers entering the historic center on the 2026 trial days, April 3 to July 26, paid the same EUR 5 to EUR 10 access fee as other day visitors.26 Greece charges the most at its busiest islands: EUR 20.00 in Santorini and Mykonos from June to September.21 Amsterdam's charge is the only one here levied per day, so a ship that stays overnight is charged for each day in port.22

Rates keep rising. Carnival raised its daily gratuity from $16.00 to $17.00 in standard cabins and from $18.00 to $19.00 in suites on April 2, 2026,27 and Celebrity moved from $18.00 to $19.50 on July 29, 2026.33 Royal Caribbean's standard rate has gone from $12.00 before its May 2015 increase34 to $18.50 since November 1, 2024, a rise of 54%4, through six increases in under ten years.35 Each increase applies to every day of every cruise, so a $1.00 rise adds $144 to a 7-night trip for two.

Suites pay more everywhere, from $19.00 a day on Carnival to $24.50 in Celebrity's top suites and $25.00 on Norwegian.30 Across the six lines, standard rates sit within $3.00 of each other, so the number of days at sea matters more than the choice of line. Norwegian's $20.00 and $25.00 rates date from a January 2023 change, so every line in the gratuity chart has raised its charge at least once since 2023.28

Drinks, dining and Wi-Fi

How much drinks cost on a cruise depends on whether a package is bought. Drinks-only packages ran from $83.9439 a day on Carnival to $13840 for Norwegian's Premium Plus, per person. Carnival's price already includes its 20% service charge, while most other lines add an 18% to 20% charge on top.39 Princess's two prices are whole fare packages that also cover Wi-Fi and gratuities, so they are not directly comparable with the drinks-only packages.41

On Carnival, both adults in a cabin must buy the package, and the $83.94 pre-purchase price, which already includes the 20% service charge, rises to $89.9439 once on board. Norwegian's $138 becomes about $165.604 with its 20% charge. For a week, one Carnival package costs $587.584 in total.

Paying by the drink instead, a Carnival standard cocktail costs $12.5044 and a specialty cocktail $14.50, while Royal Caribbean cocktails run $14 to $15, before the automatic gratuity.43 At those prices, the Carnival package, about $69.95 a day before its included service charge, pays for itself at about 5.64 standard cocktails a day.

Cruise Wi-Fi is priced per device, per day, so how much WiFi costs on a cruise depends on devices and days. Carnival's plans ran $20.4046 for social media, $23.80 for its value plan and $25.50 for premium, or $90 a day for four devices. Royal Caribbean's pre-cruise price was about $20 per device and $28.99 to $39 on board, and Norwegian's packages ran $29.99 to $39.99.47 A week on Carnival's cheapest plan costs $142.804 per device. Because plans are sold per device, a couple who both want to be online pay twice, which is what the multi-device plans are for.46

Shore excursions and travel insurance

How much shore excursions cost on a cruise ranges widely: booked through the line, they typically run $5048 to more than $300 per person. A Roatan zipline and snorkel combination ran $71 to $79, a Chichen Itza tour $104 and a Chichen Itza and cenote combination $164.48 Prices are set per person and per port, so a week with several port calls can add several of these charges.

Most cruisers buy at least one: 70%5 of cruisers went on a shore excursion in 2025, from 81% of baby boomers to 63% of Gen Z. Take-up falls with each generation younger than the baby boomers, from 77% for Gen X to 67% for millennials.5

What the data shows
  • Baby Boomers lead at 81%.
  • Gen Z trails at 63%, 18 points lower.
  • Across all cruisers, 70% took an excursion.

The trip often starts before the ship does: 64%5 of cruisers stayed at least one hotel night before or after their cruise in December 2025, and 15% stayed exactly one night on each side. That share has held between 64% and 69% in every reading since July 2023, so a hotel night belongs in most cruise budgets.

How much travel insurance costs for a cruise is usually a share of the trip price: comprehensive policies cost 4% to 10% of the insured trip cost, and 6.8% on average. The average comprehensive premium was $54049 per policy, which can cover several travelers, on an average insured trip of $7,90849; medical-only plans averaged $102. Plans with add-ons averaged $80849, so the choice of cover alone moves the average premium from $102 to $808.

What a week at sea adds up to

Put the pieces together for two adults on a 7-night cruise at the average ticket rate. That fare already includes the port fees and taxes the line collects, so they are not added again here. The cruise itself is about $2,764, daily gratuities at $18.50 add $259, and one drinks package each at $83.94 a day adds $1,175.164, service charge included.

That is $4,198.044 in total, and the two extras alone add 52%4 to the fare. Insurance, parking, excursions and Wi-Fi come on top, priced in the sections above and below.4 A policy at the 6.8% average rate on that fare would add about $1884.49

How much an all-inclusive cruise costs can be judged the same way: a fare package such as Princess's Premier, which bundles drinks, Wi-Fi and gratuities for $100 a day, replaces several of those line items with one daily price.41 The same arithmetic works for any line: multiply each daily charge by the nights and the people, then add one-off costs such as parking and insurance.

Cruise port parking

Driving to the port adds a daily parking charge for every day of the cruise. How much parking costs at the Port Canaveral cruise terminal is a flat $20.0050 a day plus tax, counting both the arrival and departure days, so a 7-night cruise means 8 days, or $1604. Parking is charged per vehicle, not per person, so it weighs less on a family sharing one car than on a solo traveler.50

At PortMiami the rate depends on the garage and the length of stay: the long-term rate is $25 a day in the shared garages and lots and $3552 in the garage used by Norwegian. Oversized vehicles pay $25 for one space or $50 for two in Lot E.52

Galveston's covered garage runs $27 to $34 a day55 and Seattle's Pier 66 $30 to $33,51 so a week of parking at the dearer lots costs more than the $160 at Port Canaveral, which has 12,61450 parking spaces.

How much a cruise ship costs to build

How much a cruise ship costs to build depends mostly on its size. Of the 11 ships due for delivery in 2026, the biggest, Legend of the Seas, cost $1.6 billion5 for 5,610 lower berths, while two small coastal ships cost $65 million5 each, about 24.64 times less. The eight ocean-going ships together represent about $6.6 billion of investment.5

  • Legend of the Seas works out to $285,205 per berth.

The three coastal ships from American Cruise Lines, at $65 million to $75 million each, cost $416,667 to $520,000 per berth, more than any of the four biggest ocean ships.4

Four of the 11 ships come from Fincantieri, together worth $3,335 million4; Chantiers de l'Atlantique builds two worth $1,500 million, and the three small coastal ships from Chesapeake add $205 million. Meyer Turku builds just one of the 11, but it is the costliest, at $1,600 million.5

Newer ships are also being built for different fuels: LNG-capable ships made up 19% of ships on order in early 2017, and multi-fuel-capable ships 57%5 in spring 2026.

The fleet those ships join keeps growing: the tracked ocean fleet rose from 507 thousand lower berths in 2018 to 692 thousand5 in 2026, with a single pandemic dip in 2021.

  • 2021 dipped to 556 thousand.
  • Capacity grew by 185 thousand berths over the period.

Ship numbers followed the same path, from 251 ships in 2018 to 3275 in 2026. The fleet added 174 ships between 2025 and 2026 alone.

What the data shows
  • The fleet grew from 251 ships in 2018 to 327 in 2026.
  • 2021 fell to 268 ships.
  • That is 76 more ships in eight years.

So far, the added ships have filled. Occupancy across the major lines was 106%19 in 2019, 102% in 2023 and 106% in 2024, so the extra berths have not left ships emptier.

How many people cruise

Demand has more than recovered from the pandemic. A record 37.2 million5 people took an ocean cruise in 2025, up from 29.7 million in 2019 and about 4.94 times the 7.6 million of 2000.

The total number of cruise passengers since 2000 comes to about 455.9 million4 trips, counting each cruise separately; the count covers member lines only until 2015 and adds other lines from 2016.5 The pandemic years stand out: 2020 and 2021 together carried 10.6 million passengers, about as many as 2004 alone.5

What the data shows
  • Passengers rose from 1.9 million in 1985 to 37.2 million in 2025.
  • 2021's 4.8 million was the pandemic low.
  • 2025 was 7.5 million above 2019's 29.7 million.

Demand signals point the same way. The share of cruisers taking two or more cruises a year reached 27.7%5 in December 2025, up from about 20% in March 2023, and openness to taking a first cruise reached 75.6%, up from 55.3% in August 2020.

Industry forecasters expect growth to continue, to 38.3 million5 passengers in 2026 and 42.1 million5 in 2029. That is a gain of 4.9 million4 over 2025, a slower pace than the recovery years, when passengers rose from 20.4 million in 2022 to 37.2 million in 2025.5

What cruising is worth to the US economy

The economic footprint of cruising is concentrated where ships sail from. In 2024 the industry generated $75.5 billion19 of US economic output and supported 332,70019 jobs, and Florida alone accounted for $30,189 million of that output, about 40%4.

Direct cruise spending in the US came to $32,954 million19 in 2024. Cruise line purchases produced $20.1 billion of direct output and passenger and crew spending $10.0 billion. Counting suppliers and the spending of workers' wages, cruise line purchases supported $47.2 billion of total output and passenger and crew spending $24.3 billion, more than double the direct figures.19

Nationally, cruise output rose from $50.3 billion in 2022 to $75.5 billion in 2024, and jobs from 229 thousand to 333 thousand.19 The GDP contribution of cruising grew from $27.7 billion to $41.4 billion over the same two years.19

The companies behind the fares

Royal Caribbean's growth shows how fast demand returned: it carried 1.03 million passengers in 2021 and 9.45 million2 in 2025, with ships sailing 109.7%2 full. Occupancy above 100% means more than two guests in some cabins, since capacity counts two berths per cabin. Its adjusted gross margin per passenger day was $242.962 in fiscal 2024, below its $263.59 net yield per berth day, because more passengers sailed than there were berths.4

What the data shows
  • Passengers rose from 1.03 million in 2021 to 9.45 million in 2025.
  • 2024 carried 8.56 million.
  • 2025 added 0.89 million over 2024.

The other two groups also grew. Carnival carried 13.6 million1 passengers in fiscal 2025 at 105% occupancy, and Norwegian carried 2,997,8293 at 103.5%.

By capacity, Carnival is the biggest of the three listed groups, with 55.4%4 of their combined 2025 capacity days, against 30.6% for Royal Caribbean and 14.0% for Norwegian.1 MSC Cruises, a large private operator, files no comparable report, so it is not part of these shares or of the $197 average.4

FAQ

How much does a cruise cost per person per day?

About $197 a day for the cruise itself, averaged across the three big listed cruise groups in fiscal 2025, and about $293 once onboard spending is included.4

Are gratuities included in the cruise fare?

No. Lines charge them as a daily amount per person on top of the fare, from $17.00 to $20.00 in standard cabins.2728

Do port taxes and fees come on top of the advertised fare?

Yes. Lead-in fares are quoted before taxes, fees and port expenses, which vary by sailing.6

How much has the cost of cruising changed since before the pandemic?

At Carnival, ticket revenue per passenger day rose 13.4%, from $150.99 in fiscal 2019 to $171.28 in fiscal 2025, before inflation; the other two big groups' 2019 figures are not included here.71

Do both people in a cabin have to buy a drinks package?

On Carnival, yes: both adults in the cabin must buy the package if one does.39

How much does it cost to park at a cruise port?

From $20 a day at Port Canaveral and Port Everglades to $47 for the premium lot at Seattle's Pier 91.51

Can a cruise ship sail more than 100% full?

Yes. Occupancy counts two guests per cabin, so third and fourth guests push it past 100%; Royal Caribbean reported 109.7% in 2025.2

How long is a typical cruise?

About 7.0 days worldwide in 2025; Hawaii sailings averaged about 11.4 days and Alaska about 7.7.5

Is cruise travel insurance priced per person?

Not necessarily: the $540 average comprehensive premium is per policy, and one policy can cover several travelers.49

How many people take a cruise each year?

A record 37.2 million people took an ocean cruise in 2025, and industry forecasts put 2026 at 38.3 million.5

Does the average daily price include flights?

Only when the cruise line sells them: ticket revenue includes air and transfers sold by the line, plus the port fees and taxes it collects, before travel-agent commissions.1

What does a 7-night cruise for two cost with gratuities and drinks?

About $4,198 at the average ticket rate, with a $18.50 daily gratuity and one $83.94-a-day drinks package each, before insurance and parking; this is an illustration built from the rates on this page.4

Which US port handles the most cruise passengers?

Miami, with 3,809,753 cruise passengers in 2023, followed by Port Canaveral and Juneau.56

Conclusions

  1. The advertised fare and the real cost are two different numbers. A lead-in fare of $231 for 7 nights, $33 a night, sits far below the $197 a day passengers actually pay the big lines on average, because that average covers every cabin and already includes air and port charges sold with the ticket.4 Onboard spending then lifts the average to $293 a day.
  2. Extras can add half again to the fare. For two people on a 7-night cruise, gratuities and one drinks package each add 52% to a $2,764 fare, before insurance, parking, Wi-Fi or excursions.4 Daily charges scale with nights and people, so they weigh most on long trips for families.
  3. Government port charges are real and uneven. An Alaska cruise calling at Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway carries up to $57.80 a person in state and local charges before any municipal credit, while Mexico's cruise passenger charge is set to rise from $10.00 to $21.00 by 2028.24 Across the destinations on this page, government charges run from $2.30 to $34.50 per passenger.
  4. Luxury and long voyages price in a different league. Even the margin Viking keeps, $583 per passenger day, is almost three times the $197 mainstream ticket average, and passengers pay more than that margin;14 long river and world voyages run $617 to $878 a day. At that end of the market, the fare is quoted per voyage and the totals reach $94,999 per person.
  5. Demand and supply are both at records. A record 37.2 million people cruised in 2025, and the fleet reached 692 thousand lower berths in 2026, with ships of up to $1.6 billion each still arriving.5 Occupancy of 106% across the major lines in 2024 shows the new berths are being filled.19

Methodology

  • Worldwide: passengers, destinations, source markets, fleet and newbuild costs.
  • United States: economic impact by state (all 50 states and DC), ports and parking.
  • Company data: the three US-listed cruise groups; MSC and other private lines are not included.

Definition. The headline daily cost is passenger ticket revenue divided by passenger cruise days for Carnival Corporation & plc, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd., fiscal 2025, weighted by passenger cruise days. Ticket revenue includes the cruise fare, air and transfers sold by the line and port fees and taxes it collects, before travel-agent commissions. Net yield is each company's adjusted gross margin per available berth day, a retained margin, not a price. Lead-in fares are the lowest published cabin price per person, double occupancy, before taxes and fees.

Data sources. Company Form 10-K filings and earnings releases on SEC EDGAR (Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian); Viking Holdings fourth-quarter 2025 results; cruise line fare, gratuity, package and Wi-Fi pages; Cruise Lines International Association State of the Cruise Industry Reports 2025 and 2026; Tourism Economics' study of the US economic contribution of cruise tourism in 2024; Bureau of Transportation Statistics port passenger counts; state, city and national government tax and port-fee pages; port authority parking pages; Squaremouth's 2026 cruise insurance cost report. Euro amounts are converted at the Federal Reserve H.10 rate for September 18, 2026 (EUR 1 = $1.1464).

Calculations. The weighted daily ticket and total revenue, per-berth build costs, shipyard totals, per-night fares, the two-person weekly budget, percentage shares, currency conversions and the capacity shares are Travel Statistics Bureau's own arithmetic, listed with each figure. Projections on the yearly line charts are a linear trend with a 95% prediction range: our calculation, not a forecast.

Limitations. Fares are dynamic and change daily; lead-in fares, package, Wi-Fi, dining and excursion prices were read on September 24, 2026. Several add-on prices, some port fees and parking rates come from secondary compilations, marked "(secondary compilation)" in the sources. The passenger series counts member lines only until 2015 and all lines from 2016; the 2023 total is 31.1 million in one table of the source report and 31.7 million in another, and this page uses 31.1 million. Average cruise lengths by region are read from a chart. The Alaska total of $57.80 is an upper bound before any municipal credit against the state tax.

About the author

Anneliese Kurz
Lead Analyst, Hotels and Hospitality

Anneliese Kurz analyzes hotel pricing, occupancy trends, loyalty-program value and the economics of the lodging sector. A graduate of one of Europe's leading hospitality business schools, she began her career in front-of-house operations before moving into revenue management, where she built demand-forecasting models for luxury and midscale properties. She rose to Vice President of Revenue Management for an international hotel group with more than 400 properties, overseeing pricing strategy across Europe, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific. During that period she led the group's response to two major demand shocks and developed the internal benchmarking system still used to compare property performance against market data. Anneliese holds a professional certification in hotel-industry analytics and has lectured on revenue strategy at her alma mater and at industry conferences. Her analyses rely on industry benchmark data, public company filings and her own modeling, with methodology disclosed on every piece.
