Royal Caribbean Cruise Ships by Age (2026 Data)

Grandeur of the Seas first sailed for Royal Caribbean in 1996 and measures 73,817¹ gross tons today. Legend of the Seas, which began service in July 2026, measures 248,663¹ gross tons, 3.37² times as much, and both sail under the same brand today.¹ As of September 2026 the fleet counts 30¹ ships, and counted from each ship's first year in service they average 16.6² years.

Below, every ship is listed by age, size and crew, followed by how the fleet grew year by year, what a week on board costs per person, and what drinks, WiFi, gratuities, island add-ons and travel protection add to the fare. The last sections turn to the company behind the ships: its revenue and profit per passenger, how full its ships sail, and where they go.

Royal Caribbean cruise ships by age

Age here means 2026 minus the year a ship entered service with Royal Caribbean International. On that basis the 30 ships average 16.6 years and the median ship is 18.5² years old.³¹ The oldest is Grandeur of the Seas at 30², followed by Rhapsody of the Seas and Enchantment of the Seas, both from 1997, at 29².¹ The newest is Legend of the Seas, whose maiden voyage was July 4, 2026; Star of the Seas is 1² year old, and Icon of the Seas and Utopia of the Seas are 2².¹

14² ships, or 47%² of the fleet, are 20 years or older in 2026, and 8² are under 10.¹ The picture changes when guests are counted instead of ships. The newest ships are also the biggest, so the average guest place sits on a ship 13.8² years old, about 3² years younger than the average ship.²

Together the 30 ships hold 117,204² guests at two per stateroom and 44,604² crew, by the sum of the ships' own figures, and measure 4,799,419² gross tons.¹ Gross tonnage is a measure of enclosed volume, not weight. The parent company counted about 111,000³ berths for the 29 ships in service at the end of 2025; Legend of the Seas adds another 5,600³.³

Ships by class and decade

Royal Caribbean builds its ships in classes of sisters. The six Oasis-class ships, from 2009 to 2024, hold 33,937² guests, 29.0%² of all guest places and more than any other class.¹ The three Icon-class ships come second with 16,830² guests, 14.4%², even though the first of them only entered service in 2024. The five Voyager-class ships, built from 1999 to 2003, are third with 16,714².

The oldest class is the smallest.¹ The four Vision-class ships, built from 1996 to 1998, average 78,486² gross tons and a mean age of 29.0² years, while the Icon class averages 1.0² year.¹ By decade of entry, the 2000s left the biggest mark on today's fleet: 12² of the 30 ships entered service in that decade, against 5² from the 1990s, 7² from the 2010s and 6² so far from the 2020s.¹

The six ships from the 2020s already hold 32,430² guests, not far behind the 39,065² on the 12 ships from the 2000s.¹ Ships from the 1990s hold 11,936² guests between them.

Crew and shipyards

Across the fleet there are 2.63² guests for every crew member.¹ The ratio differs by class. Voyager of the Seas carries 3.00² guests per crew member, while each Icon-class ship carries 2.39², with 2,350¹ crew for 5,610¹ guests.¹ A lower number means more crew per guest.

Across all the company's brands, about 87%³ of shipboard employees were covered by collective bargaining agreements at the end of 2025.³ Stateroom counts range from 996¹ on Grandeur of the Seas to 2,867¹ on Wonder of the Seas.¹

Three countries built the whole fleet. Yards in Finland delivered 15² of the 30 ships, 50%², holding 60,840² guests; German yards built 9², 30%², and French yards 6², 20%².¹⁴ The Finnish yard at Turku built every Voyager-, Freedom- and Icon-class ship and the first two Oasis-class ships, and the Helsinki yard built Grandeur and Enchantment of the Seas.¹⁵ Meyer Werft at Papenburg in Germany built all four Radiance-class ships and every Quantum- and Quantum Ultra-class ship.⁴¹

From 73,817 to 248,663 gross tons

Grandeur of the Seas holds 1,992¹ guests; Wonder of the Seas, from 2022, holds 5,734¹, 2.88² times as many and the most of any ship in the fleet.¹ The jump did not come gradually. Ranked by today's gross tonnage, after refits and Enchantment of the Seas' 2005 lengthening, Voyager of the Seas, from 1999, was the first ship in today's fleet above 137,000¹ gross tons; Oasis of the Seas, from 2009, measures 226,838¹ today, and Icon of the Seas, from 2024, 248,663.¹

Size does not always mean more guests. Icon of the Seas is 13,063² gross tons larger than Wonder of the Seas but is rated for fewer guests at double occupancy, 5,610¹ against 5,734, and it is 1,196¹ feet (364¹ meters) long.¹ It also has fewer staterooms, 2,805¹ against Wonder's 2,867¹.

Ships coming next

At the end of 2025 the brand had four ships on order with about 22,500³ berths between them.³ One, Legend of the Seas, has since entered service. The next is Hero of the Seas, the fourth Icon-class ship, with a maiden voyage set for August 11, 2027 and room for 5,654¹ guests.¹ A fifth Icon-class ship and a seventh Oasis-class ship follow in 2028, and in December 2025 the company signed agreements, subject to conditions, for two ships of a new Discovery class, due in 2029 and 2032.³

Every ship on order with a stated size carries 5,600³ to 5,700³ berths, close to the largest ships sailing today.³ The same report counts 3³ private destinations operated by the company, with plans to reach 7³ by 2028, and itineraries that call on more than 1,000³ destinations.

How the fleet grew, year by year

Each annual report states how many ships Royal Caribbean International operates and how many berths they hold. In the report for 2004 the brand had 19⁶ ships with 44,136⁶ berths; at the end of 2025 it had 29³ ships with about 111,000³, 2.51² times as many berths.⁶³ Ship numbers rose by only 10² in the same years. Between 2019 and 2025 alone the brand added 23,850² berths.²

Berths dipped in 2020, from 87,150²¹ to 84,200²², as the ship count fell from 26²¹ to 24²², and growth resumed the next year.²¹²² On the 2004-2025 trend, our calculation and not a forecast, berths would reach about 132,700² by 2035 and 177,400² by 2050.²

Most of the growth came from bigger ships, not from more of them. An average ship held 2,323² berths in 2004 and 3,828² in 2025, 1.65² times as many.² On the fitted trend the average would reach about 4,537² berths by 2035, and each ship on order is larger still.

So what does a week on one of these ships cost?

How much is a Royal Caribbean cruise?

In the 30 days to March 10, 2026, tracked Royal Caribbean fares for sailings in 2026 and 2027 averaged $235²⁷ per person per night across all cabin types.²⁷ That is $1,645²⁷ per person for 7 nights, or $3,290²⁷ for two sharing a cabin. Taxes and port charges add about $100²⁷ to $300²⁷ per person on top, and gratuities are charged separately.²⁷

Royal Caribbean sat in the middle of eight large lines, above Carnival, MSC, Princess and Norwegian and below Virgin Voyages, Celebrity and Disney.²⁷ Its average night cost 1.58² times Carnival's $149²⁷.

Royal Caribbean cruise price per person

Cabin type moves the price more than anything else. An interior cabin averaged $169²⁷ per person per night, an oceanview cabin $209²⁷, a balcony $235²⁷ and a suite $459²⁷, 2.72² times the interior rate.²⁷ For 7 nights that runs from $1,181²⁷ per person inside to $3,216²⁷ in a suite.

How much is a cruise on Icon of the Seas?

The newest class costs more. For a 7-night sailing on Icon of the Seas, an interior cabin ran $1,555²⁸ to $2,500²⁸ per person before taxes in April 2026, or from about $222² a night.²⁸ Balconies ran $2,426²⁸ to $4,500²⁸ per person, and suites from $5,000²⁸ to $10,000²⁸ and up.

The three-level Ultimate Family Townhouse is priced for the whole unit rather than per person, at about $70,000²⁸ to $80,000²⁸ a week.²⁸ Against the brand-wide interior average of $1,181 for 7 nights, the lowest Icon interior fare is about $374² more per person.

How much does a 1-week Royal Caribbean cruise cost?

Take two people in an interior cabin for 7 nights at the average tracked fare. The fare comes to $2,362² for the pair, and automatic gratuities of $18.50 per person per day add $259², for $2,621² before taxes and port charges.²⁷²⁹ One device's Surf and Stream WiFi plan for the week, at the median price, raises that to about $2,761².³⁰

Taxes and port charges of $100 to $300 a person come on top. Across all the company's brands, the average cruise lasted 6.20² days in 2025, so a 7-night sailing is a little longer than the norm.³

How much are drinks on a Royal Caribbean cruise?

Most drinks are sold one at a time or through packages whose price changes by ship and sailing. The Deluxe Beverage Package, which covers drinks priced up to $14³¹ each, had a fleet median of $83.99³¹ per person per day across 29³¹ tracked ships, with prices from $56.99³¹ to $120.00³¹.³¹ An automatic 18% gratuity is added on top of beverage package prices.²⁹ For a week that means $587.93² per person before the gratuity and $693.76² with it.

Newer ships charge more for the same package. On the 7² tracked ships under 10 years old the median was $91.99² a day, against $83.99² on the 14 ships aged 20 or more.³¹² The fleet median also moved through the year: it was $76.99³¹ in February, fell to $71.99³¹ in May and reached $83.99 in August.³¹

Cheaper packages cover less. The Refreshment Package had a median of $28.99³² a night in July 2026.³² So how much is a beer on a Royal Caribbean cruise without a package? Domestic beer was tracked at $7³³ to $8³³ a la carte, house wine at $9³³ to $11³³ a glass and a poolside frozen cocktail at $12³³ to $14³³.³³ The 18% gratuity applies to drinks bought one at a time as well.²⁹

How much is a soda on a Royal Caribbean cruise? Fountain soda comes with the Classic Soda Package, tracked at $11³² to $12³² a night in July 2026.³²

WiFi, tips and add-ons

Beyond drinks, the daily extras are WiFi, gratuities and paid experiences ashore. The table below puts the daily prices side by side; package prices are medians or ranges, and the gratuities are the line's own rates.²⁹³⁰³²

How much is WiFi on a Royal Caribbean cruise?

The onboard WiFi, called VOOM, is priced by the number of devices and the plan, and buying before the cruise gives the biggest discount from onboard prices.³⁴ The Surf and Stream plan had a median of $19.99³⁰ per night across 30³⁰ tracked ships in July 2026, in a range of $17.99³⁰ to $39.91³⁰.³⁰ The Key, which bundles WiFi with priority perks, had a median of $28.99³⁰ a day. On the Icon class the WiFi plan ran about $18³⁰ to $25³⁰ a night, and on the older Vision-class ships $18³⁰ to $22³⁰.

How much to tip the waiter on a Royal Caribbean cruise?

There is no separate amount for the waiter. Royal Caribbean adds an automatic gratuity of $18.50²⁹ per guest per day in standard staterooms and $21.00²⁹ in suites, and pools it for dining, bar and culinary staff, stateroom attendants, hotel services teams and others.²⁹ Guests can change the amount at Guest Relations before the morning of disembarkation. Drinks, beverage packages, specialty dining and room service carry an 18% gratuity, and spa and salon services 20%²⁹.²⁹

The rate has risen three times since 2022, from $14.50³⁵ to $18.50 in standard staterooms, 27.6%² in about two years.³⁵³⁶³⁷ Among five large lines, Royal Caribbean's standard rate is above Carnival, Princess and Holland America and below Norwegian.^2938394041

How much are Royal Caribbean cruise excursions at CocoCay?

The excursion prices here are the add-ons at Perfect Day at CocoCay, one of the line's private destinations; tours in other ports are not covered. CocoCay sells its add-ons by the day. A full-day pass to the Thrill Waterpark typically cost about $72⁴² to $74⁴² per adult in June 2026, within a tracked range of $49⁴² to $189⁴².⁴² A beach bed ran a typical $263⁴³ per person.⁴³

Cabana prices vary widely by date and ship, and the price is for the whole cabana, not per guest. For a group of four, a typical Beach Club Overwater Cabana comes to about $532² a person for the day.⁴³²

How much is Royal Caribbean travel insurance?

Royal Caribbean sells its own Travel Protection Program, priced by the cruise cost per person. A cruise costing $1,501⁴⁴ to $2,000⁴⁴ per person carries a plan price of $149⁴⁴, about 9.1%² of the $1,645 average 7-night fare; the lowest band, up to $250⁴⁴, costs $39⁴⁴.⁴⁴² Above $14,001 per person the price is $1,799⁴⁴.

The plan mixes insurance with a cancellation waiver. Cancel for a covered reason and it returns 100%⁴⁵ of the unused prepaid trip cost; cancel for any other reason and it gives 90%⁴⁵ back as future cruise credit, not cash.⁴⁵ In New York and Hawaii that any-reason waiver is not available, and trip cancellation is insured instead.⁴⁵

From one cabin's bar tab to a company taking in billions a year: the ships belong to Royal Caribbean Group, which also owns Celebrity Cruises and Silversea.³ Every figure in this section covers all of its brands, not Royal Caribbean International alone.

The company behind the ships

Royal Caribbean Group's revenue reached a record $17,935M⁴⁷ in 2025, 1.64² times the $10,951M⁴⁷ of 2019.⁴⁷ In 2021, during the suspension and restart of sailing, it was $1,532M⁴⁷. On the 2004-2025 trend, which includes those pause years and is our calculation rather than a forecast, revenue would be about $15,531M² in 2035 and $20,969M² in 2050, below the 2025 level until the 2040s.²

Profit swung harder. The group lost $5,797M⁴⁷ in 2020, $5,260M⁴⁷ in 2021 and $2,156M⁴⁷ in 2022, $13,213M² in three years.⁴⁷ In 2025 it earned a record $4,268M⁴⁷. A straight-line trend through losses of that size says nothing useful, so net income is shown as a table with no projection.

Passenger numbers tell the same story. The group carried 9,446,010³ passengers in 2025, 44%² more than the 6,553,865²² of 2019.³²² On the 2004-2025 trend, our calculation and not a forecast, passengers would number about 10.65M² by 2050, below the 2025 level until the 2040s, because the fit includes the 2020-2022 pause.²

Ships sail fuller than full. Occupancy compares passenger days with two guests per cabin, so a third or fourth guest in a cabin pushes it above 100%. It reached a record 109.7%³ in 2025, against 49.3%³ in 2021.³ Because a rate held near 105% to 110% cannot follow a straight line for decades, occupancy is shown without a projection.

Most of the money comes from North America. Of $17,071M³ in 2025 revenue split by itinerary, 67.6%² came from sailings in North America, which includes the Caribbean, 17.3%² from Europe and 10.1%² from Asia-Pacific.³ Onboard and other revenue made up 30.2%³ of total revenue.

Asia-Pacific grew fastest from a small base: $993M³ in 2023 and $1,716M in 2025.³ The table shows the three years side by side.

The group holds about a quarter of the world's cruise berths. Its 174,600³ weighted-average berths in 2025 were 24.1%² of a global supply of 725,000³, close to its 24.5%² share in 2019.³ Global cruise guests reached 37³ million in 2025.

The ships reach far inland in economic terms too. Across all cruise lines, cruise activity supported $41,428M⁴⁹ of US GDP in 2024, directly and through suppliers and spending, and $16,707M⁴⁹ of it, 40.3%², in Florida.⁴⁹ The map shows the whole industry, not Royal Caribbean alone.

How much does Royal Caribbean make per cruise?

Dividing the group's figures by the passengers it carried gives a rough answer. In 2025 revenue came to $1,898.69² per passenger and net income to $451.83².²³ These are company averages over every brand, cabin and itinerary, not a fare. Revenue per passenger was $560.93² higher than in 2004 but slightly below the $1,924.74² of 2024.

Per day at sea the rise is clearer, because cruises got shorter. Revenue per passenger cruise day reached $306.48² in 2025, 25.4%² above the $244.41² of 2019.²³ On the 2004-2025 trend it would be about $365² by 2050, our calculation and not a forecast. In 2004 it was $201.01².

The average cruise lasted 7.28² days in 2013 and 6.20² in 2025.²³ Shorter trips let each berth carry more passengers in a year.

The company's own yardstick is Net Yield: revenue after commissions, transport and onboard costs, per available passenger cruise day. It was $273.51³ in 2025, 30.9%² above the $208.88²¹ of 2019; in 2021 it was $102.57²⁵, and for 2020 none was reported.^3212522 The basis changed over the years, so the table lists each value as first reported, with no projection.

What it means for your budget

Two people in an interior cabin for 7 nights pay $2,362² in average fare. Automatic gratuities add 11.0%² to that, and two Deluxe packages for the week add $1,175.86² before their own 18% gratuity, 49.8%² of the fare.²⁷²⁹³¹ Travel protection for a fare in that range costs $109⁴⁴ per person.⁴⁴

A suite changes the scale. The average 7-night suite fare is $3,216²⁷ per person, and the suite gratuity of $21.00 a day adds $147² per person for the week.²⁷²⁹

The extras follow people and days, not cabins. Gratuities and drink packages are charged per person per day and WiFi per device, so every extra night or extra guest raises them again.²⁹³⁴

Conclusions

1. Royal Caribbean runs two fleets at once. 14 of its 30 ships are 20 or older, yet the nine Oasis- and Icon-class ships hold 43.3% of all guest places, so the average guest place is on a younger ship (13.8 years) than the average ship (16.6).¹²
2. Growth came from bigger ships more than from more ships. Berths rose 2.51 times from 2004 to 2025 while the ship count went from 19 to 29; berths per ship rose from 2,323 to 3,828, and every ship on order with a stated size carries 5,600 to 5,700 berths.⁶³
