The calendar moves that number more than anything else: the typical round trip to Thailand is $4721 in February and $8001 in June. No airline flies nonstop between the two countries, so every itinerary has at least one connection, and the trip averages 23 hours 6 minutes1.
Since June 20, 2026 every international ticket out of Thailand's six main airports also carries a 1,120-baht2 passenger service charge, about $33.573. Below: fares by Thai city, month and route, the taxes built into the ticket, and the official record of international aircraft movements (passenger and cargo) at Thailand's main airports: 444,9444 international landings and take-offs and 126.0 million4 passengers at the six airports in the year to September 2025.
The average fare to Thailand in 2026
How much is a flight to Bangkok?
A round trip from the US to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi averages $4841, counting every US departure airport together; no period or cabin mix is given for this average. Suvarnabhumi is the cheapest airport to fly into in Thailand and the starting point for the domestic flights to the islands and the north.1 The figure is an average of prices seen, not a guaranteed fare: from Los Angeles, the cheapest quarter of round trips to Thailand cost $1,5771 or less, a reminder that the average hides a wide spread by departure city, season and cabin.
How much is a flight to Phuket?
Flying straight through to the islands or the north costs more. In the last five days, the cheapest round trips found from the US were $6371 to Phuket with one stop and $6311 to Chiang Mai with two stops. Ko Samui came in at $7881 and Krabi at $9091; for smaller airports such as Udon Thani ($1,1531), Surat Thani ($1,1611) and Trang ($1,2371, three stops), the cheapest recent fare was more than twice the Bangkok average.1 These are single low fares, not averages, so they sit next to the Bangkok figure rather than being compared with it to the dollar.
- Chiang Mai had the lowest fare found, $631.
- Phuket followed at $637.
- Trang was the highest at $1,237, with three stops.
Flying from Bangkok to the islands and the north
Once in Bangkok, the domestic hop is cheap. Round trips from Suvarnabhumi average $8256 to both Phuket and Krabi and $897 to Chiang Mai over the past 12 months. Koh Samui is the exception at $2518, about 3.13 times the Phuket fare for a shorter flight.
How much is a flight from Bangkok to Phuket?
The average round trip is $825, and most fares fall between $655 and $1035. Tuesday departures run about 7%5 below the average and Friday departures about 9%5 above it. September is the cheapest month at $625 for the round trip, and the nonstop takes 1h 33m5.
- Koh Samui averages $251.
- Chiang Mai averages $89.
- Phuket and Krabi both average $82.
For Chiang Mai, the average flight price from Bangkok to Chiang Mai in 2025 and 2026 so far is $897 round trip, with the usual range between $757 and $1217. The north has its cheapest month in September ($677) as well, and the flight is the second-shortest of the four, after Koh Samui, 1h 22m7.
For the Andaman coast further south, the average flight price from Bangkok to Krabi in 2025 and 2026 so far is $826, the same as Phuket, with the usual range between $676 and $1066. Monday is the cheapest day to fly, about 4%6 below the average.
And how much is a flight from Bangkok to Koh Samui? The round trip averages $2518, with a usual range of $1858 to $3128; even the cheapest month, November, costs $1878. Day of the week hardly matters on this route: Tuesday is only 3%8 below the average and Saturday 1%8 above it.

How long the flight to Thailand takes
There are no nonstop flights from any US airport to Thailand, and the average flight time to Thailand is 23 hours 6 minutes1 for a distance of 8,615 miles1 (13,864 km3). The shortest trip starts in Honolulu: Honolulu to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi takes about 16 hours 30 minutes1.
The domestic legs are short by comparison: no Bangkok route in the table below takes longer than 1h 33m5 in the air, and the longest, to Phuket, covers 419 miles5.
| 1 | United States to Thailand (average) | 23h 06m | 8,615 |
| 2 | Bangkok to Phuket (nonstop) | 1h 33m | 419 |
| 3 | Bangkok to Krabi (nonstop) | 1h 26m | 404 |

The cheapest time to fly to Thailand
Thailand's flight prices by month, cheapest to priciest, run from February, when the typical round trip is $4721, to June at $8001, with December at $7051 close behind. June costs $3283 more than February for the same trip. These are median prices over the past 12 months, with the most extreme 0.1% of prices removed; only these three months are published for the country as a whole.
| February (cheapest) | 472 |
| December | 705 |
| June (priciest) | 800 |
Day of the week matters too. Wednesday is the cheapest day to fly, with round trips as low as $8741, while Friday departures average $1,1361. Booking about four weeks before departure gives a below-average price and saves about 6%1 against a last-minute booking; the very lowest prices of the past year came 21 weeks1 ahead.
Traffic follows a different calendar. At Thailand's six main airports, international passenger numbers peaked in January 2025 at 7,877,7184 and bottomed out in June 2025 at 5,239,7144; the peak month was 1.503 times the quietest. June was the quietest month at the airports in that year and is the priciest month in the fare data,1 4 but the two cover different 12-month periods, so the match is a pattern, not a measured link.

The airports also count international aircraft movements (passenger and cargo), each landing and each take-off once. The six airports recorded 43,6174 of them in January 2025 and 32,5654 in September 2025, the lowest month of the fiscal year; June had 32,7494. The airport statistics do not split passenger and cargo movements, so these counts include freighters and are not a count of passenger flights.

Taxes and fees inside a Thailand ticket
Part of every fare is fixed by governments and airports. On the Thai side, the passenger service charge for international departures from the six main airports rose from 730 baht2 to 1,120 baht2 for tickets issued from June 20, 2026, an increase of 53.4%3. At the latest exchange rate, 33.36 baht9 per dollar, that is $33.573, up from $21.883. The charge is collected in the ticket price, not at the airport, and domestic flights keep the 130-baht2 charge.
| International, tickets issued from June 20, 2026 | 1,120 | 33.57 |
| International, tickets issued before June 20, 2026 | 730 | 21.88 |
| Domestic flights | 130 | 3.90 |
On the American side, a round trip starting in the US pays the international departure and arrival taxes of $23.4010 each, the September 11 Security Fee of $5.6011 once, on the leg that starts in the US, and three fees on the way home: customs ($7.3912), immigration ($7.0013, set in the statute) and agricultural inspection ($3.8414). Two of them change on October 1, 2026: the customs fee rises to $7.6115, and the agricultural inspection fee rises to $3.9814 for tickets bought from that date. Passenger Facility Charges are $4.5016 per boarding at a US airport. With no nonstop flight, a one-stop trip changes planes abroad, so it pays for one US boarding, the first; the legal cap of two boardings in each direction, $18.003, applies only to trips with two US boardings in each direction.
With one connection each way the US items add up to $75.133 today and $75.493 from October 1, and with Thailand's departure charge the fixed part of a round trip comes to $108.703, more than a fifth of the $4841 Bangkok average.

The planned Thailand Travel Fee
A new entry fee is planned but not yet collected. Thailand is consulting on a flat 450-baht17 fee, about $13.493, for every foreign visitor arriving by air, land or sea, with the public consultation running until September 28, 2026. After Cabinet approval and publication in the Royal Gazette, collection would start 180 days later, which puts the first air arrivals paying it in early to mid 2027 at the earliest. Transit passengers, crew and children under 2 would be exempt, and one payment would cover entries within 30 days and include travel insurance for that period.17
| Proposed fee per entry (air, land or sea) | 450 baht (about $13.49) |
| Public consultation | August 24 to September 28, 2026 |
| Collection starts | 180 days after publication in the Royal Gazette |
| Earliest collection for air arrivals | Early to mid 2027 |
| Land and sea checkpoints | About 360 days after air arrivals start |
| Exempt (proposed) | Transit passengers, crew, children under 2, diplomatic and official passports, work-permit holders |
Thailand's airports
Six airports run by the national airport company carried 125,989,5054 passengers in the fiscal year from October 2024 to September 2025, 5.6%3 more than a year earlier and 88.8%3 of the fiscal 2019 level. International passengers made up 76,636,3874 of the total, up from 72,674,3344 a year earlier, and domestic passengers 49,353,1184, up from 46,618,8874. These counts include every arriving and departing passenger, Thai and foreign, on international and domestic flights.
Bangkok's two airports
Suvarnabhumi handled 62,663,4054 passengers in fiscal 2025, 2.003 times the 31,337,6584 at Don Mueang, and together the two Bangkok airports carried 74.6%3 of all six airports' passengers. The difference is in the mix: 80.7%3 of Suvarnabhumi's passengers flew internationally, against 39.9%3 at Don Mueang, where domestic passengers outnumber international ones.
Suvarnabhumi alone carried 50,564,7924 international passengers, 66.0%3 of the six airports' total. Its busiest month was December 2024 with 4,964,3374 international passengers and its quietest September 2025 with 3,618,5714, a gap of 1.373 times, narrower than at Phuket, where the busiest month had 2.223 times the international passengers of the quietest.

Counting domestic passengers too, the recovery is uneven. Measured against fiscal 2019, Suvarnabhumi was back to 96.8%3 of its traffic in fiscal 2025 and Phuket to 97.2%3, while Chiang Mai reached 82.9%3 and Don Mueang 76.4%3. Don Mueang's own history is the sharpest: it carried 2,717,41321 passengers in fiscal 2012 and 41,008,37918 in fiscal 2019. The lowest point for the six airports was fiscal 2021, with 20,010,56420 passengers in all.

Mapped by region, the six airports show how concentrated air traffic is. The Central region, with both Bangkok airports, had 94,001,0633 passengers in fiscal 2025; the South, with Phuket and Hat Yai, 20,657,7103; the North, with Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, 11,330,7323. The Northeast, East and West have none of the six airports, so the map leaves them blank.
- The Central region's two Bangkok airports handled 94,001,063 passengers.
- The South handled 20,657,710.
What these numbers mean for your trip
For most American travelers the cheapest plan is two tickets: a long-haul round trip to Bangkok, averaging $4841, and a domestic round trip onward, $8256 to Phuket or Krabi and $897 to Chiang Mai. The cheapest through fare found to Phuket in the last few days, $6371, shows that a single ticket can compete, so it is worth pricing both ways. Koh Samui is different: at $2518 the domestic leg alone is more than half of the Bangkok average.
Timing matters more than any sale. A February departure has a typical fare of $4721, $3283 less than June, and on the Phuket, Krabi and Chiang Mai routes from Bangkok, September brings the lowest domestic fares of the year.5 6 7 The fixed charges, about $108.703 per round trip today with one connection each way, cannot be avoided, and the planned 450-baht17 entry fee would add about $13.493 per person from 2027 if it is approved. Finally, plan for the time: 23 hours 6 minutes1 on average from the US, with at least one change of plane.
How Thailand compares with nearby destinations
Thailand's figures are not measured quite the same way as its neighbors': for Japan, the Philippines and Vietnam, the country average of prices found in the last month is published, while for Thailand only the Bangkok airport average (period not stated) and the monthly medians are. With that caveat, a round trip to Japan averages $96225, to the Philippines $75526 and to Vietnam $72527, all above Thailand's $4841 Bangkok average and its $4721 February median.
| 1 | Japan (country average) | 962 |
| 2 | The Philippines (country average) | 755 |
| 3 | Vietnam (country average) | 725 |
| 4 | Thailand: Bangkok Suvarnabhumi average | 484 |
FAQ
Which Thai airport is the least expensive to fly into from the US?
Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, where round trips average $484; cities such as Phuket and Chiang Mai cost more to reach on one ticket.1
Is there a nonstop flight from the US to Thailand?
No. Every itinerary has at least one connection; the shortest trip, from Honolulu to Bangkok, takes about 16 hours 30 minutes.1
How much is Thailand's airport departure charge?
1,120 baht for international tickets issued from June 20, 2026, up from 730 baht; it is included in the ticket price.2
Do visitors have to pay the Thailand Travel Fee now?
No. The 450-baht fee is still a proposal; collection for air arrivals would start in 2027 at the earliest.17
When do flights from Bangkok to Phuket cost the least?
September, with a typical round trip of $62.5
Conclusions
- Bangkok is the cheap door. A round trip to Suvarnabhumi averages $4841, and the domestic leg onward costs $825 to $897 for Phuket, Krabi or Chiang Mai.
- Season sets the price. The typical fare runs from $4721 in February to $8001 in June.
- Koh Samui costs a premium. At $2518, the Bangkok-Koh Samui round trip costs 3.13 times the Phuket or Krabi fare.
- The fixed charges went up. Thailand's departure charge is 1,120 baht2 since June 20, 2026, and together with US taxes about $108.703 of a one-stop round trip is government charges.
- International air traffic is close to its peak. The six main airports handled 444,9444 international aircraft movements (passenger and cargo) in fiscal 2025, 90.4%3 of fiscal 2019.
Methodology
- Fares: prices seen up to September 27, 2026; all US departure airports combined; 12 Thai cities and 4 domestic routes from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi.
- Airports: fiscal years 2010-2025 (October 2009-September 2025), six airports; monthly figures for fiscal year 2025.
Definition. Fares are round-trip prices published on commercial fare-search pages (KAYAK, labelled commercial): the Bangkok figure is an average price whose period the source does not state; the domestic route figures are averages of prices seen over the past 12 months; monthly figures are medians after the top 0.1% of prices is removed; the city fares are the cheapest single round trips found in the last 5 days; the Wednesday figure is a low price and the Friday figure an average. Different statistics are never subtracted from each other. Airport figures are all passengers (arriving, departing and transit, international and domestic) at the six airports of Airports of Thailand PCL, by fiscal year October-September, not tourists and not calendar years. International aircraft movements (passenger and cargo) count each landing and each take-off once.
Data sources. Commercial fare-search pages (KAYAK): the Thailand country page and four Bangkok route pages, fetched September 27, 2026, and the Japan, Philippines and Vietnam country pages, fetched September 26, 2026; Airports of Thailand PCL, Air Transport Statistic fiscal-year files FY2011-FY2025; Tourism Authority of Thailand Newsroom (passenger service charge); Nation Thailand (Thailand Travel Fee proposal); IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32, TSA, CBP Dec. 25-10 and 26-14, 8 U.S.C. 1356(d), 7 CFR 354.3 and 14 CFR 158 (US taxes and fees); Federal Reserve H.10 exchange rate.
Calculations. Baht amounts for 2026 are converted at 33.36 baht per dollar (Federal Reserve H.10, September 18, 2026). Percent changes, shares, the US fee totals and the regional sums on the map are our arithmetic. The US fee total assumes one connection each way, outside the US: the September 11 Security Fee is paid once and the Passenger Facility Charge ($4.50) for one US boarding; the legal cap is two boardings in each direction. The yearly airport series break in fiscal 2020-2022, so they are shown as tables and not projected.
Limitations. Commercial fare figures have no stated sample size or cabin mix and change daily; only three months are published for Thailand as a whole. Airports of Thailand does not split passenger and cargo movements, so the aircraft movement counts include freighters. The map and the movement counts cover only the six airports of one operator; Krabi, Ko Samui, Udon Thani and other airports are run by other operators and are not included. Airport passengers count every traveler twice on a round trip (departure and arrival) and include Thai residents. The Thailand Travel Fee is a proposal and may change before it is collected. US fees are those in force on September 27, 2026; the customs and agricultural inspection fees change on October 1, 2026, as the table shows.
