A round trip from the United States to the UK costs about $8201 on average right now, and London is where most of those trips go: it takes 98%1 of flight searches to the UK,1 and Heathrow and Gatwick together handled 91.8%2 of nonstop US-UK passengers in 2025.3 That average hides a wide spread. By month the median runs from $3801 in February to $6351 in June. London is also one of the shortest long-haul hops from the US: a nonstop from New York JFK to Heathrow averages 6h 50m1 in the air.
Below: fares by month, arrival airport, US city, weekday and booking week; the UK duty, US taxes and fees and Heathrow charges that sit inside every ticket; flight times in both directions; 36 years of official US-UK traffic data; and where North American visitors go once they land, in a year when US visits to the UK hit a record 5.6 million4.
The average fare from the US to London in 2026
So, how much is a flight ticket from the USA to the UK? Over the past month, round trips from every US airport to every UK airport averaged $8201, a snapshot of fares seen up to late September 2026 that mixes cabin classes and does not state a sample size. Because London dominates the route, the UK-wide average is the closest reading of the price of a London trip: London takes 98%1 of flight searches to the UK, Edinburgh 2%1 and Manchester under 1%.1 The low end is much lower. In the two weeks before the snapshot, the cheapest round trip found anywhere between the two countries was $1491, Orlando to Edinburgh, and the cheapest one-way ticket listed was $1721; the cheapest round trip to London in those five days was $2891.1 Those are single tickets on single dates, useful as a floor, not as a typical price.
Which London airport is cheaper?
Flights into London Gatwick average $2971, the lowest of any UK airport, against $4791 into London Heathrow, a gap of $1832. Glasgow ($4041) and Edinburgh ($4591) sit in between, and Manchester is the dearest at $6381.1 These airport averages are much lower than the headline average because they come from a different part of the same fare pages and a different set of prices, so compare them with each other, not with the $8201 figure.
- Manchester is the most expensive at $638.
- London Gatwick is the cheapest at $297.
- Heathrow costs $183 more than Gatwick.
Cheap is not the same as busy. Heathrow handled 85.8%2 of the 94,7845 passenger flights operated between the US and the UK in 2025, counting both directions, and 385 UK airports had at least one.5 Gatwick's low average reflects a small number of routes, several flown by low-cost carriers; Heathrow's reflects a huge network with every cabin class. From what you pay to where you pay it from: the US departure city matters more.
Where you fly from sets the price
How much is a flight to London from New York?
New York, the biggest gateway, averaged $9581 for a round trip to the UK over the past month, $1382 above the all-US average, with the cheapest ticket at $4831.1 That average is the best answer for a typical ticket, since London takes nearly all flight searches to the UK. New York's JFK and Newark airports had 25,5682 passenger flights to and from the UK in 2025, about 4902 a week counting both directions, more than any other US city.5
Nonstop deals exist too. In the fare listings, New York JFK-Heathrow round trips with no stops in either direction were offered at $6081 for late January and early February 2027 and at $6271 to $6311 for October 2026, all below the city's $9581 average.1

| 2 | New York | 958 | 483 |
| 3 | Boston | 922 | 597 |
| 4 | Los Angeles | 865 | 289 |
The West Coast is where the averages split. Asking how much is a flight from California to the UK, the answer depends on the airport: Los Angeles averaged $8651 and San Francisco $1,1101, a $2452 gap between two cities a short hop apart. Los Angeles also produced the cheapest ticket of the four cities, $2891.1 California matters to this route: the state is the home of 15%4 of US visits to the UK, and the New York tri-state area of 19%4.4
On the East Coast, how much is a flight from Boston to London has a similar answer to New York: an average of $9221 over the past month, with the cheapest ticket at $5971.1 Boston also has the shortest nonstop of any US-UK route, to Heathrow in an average of 6h 30m1.
Cheapest recent deals from each US airport
The listings below are single itineraries, the cheapest recently offered round trip on each route, with its dates and the number of stops each way.1 They show what a good price looks like, not what most travelers pay. For how much is a flight from Chicago to London, the best listed deal was $7191 to Heathrow for October 4 to 13, nonstop out and one stop back.1 Chicago O'Hare had 5,9365 passenger flights to and from the UK in 2025, about 1142 a week in both directions.5 And how much is a flight from Florida to London? From Orlando, Florida's main London gateway in the listings, the best deal was $4531 to Gatwick for January 15 to February 16, 2027, nonstop both ways, the cheapest route listing in this table.1
| 1 | Orlando (MCO) - London Gatwick | 453 | Jan 15 - Feb 16, 2027 | 0 / 0 |
| 2 | New York JFK - London Gatwick | 605 | Oct 10 - 28, 2026 | 1 / 1 |
| 3 | New York JFK - London Heathrow | 606 | Nov 6 - 15, 2026 | 1 / 1 |
| 4 | Boston (BOS) - London Heathrow | 668 | Nov 6 - 20, 2026 | 1 / 1 |
| 5 | Newark (EWR) - London Heathrow | 701 | Dec 8 - 10, 2026 | 2 / 2 |
| 6 | Chicago O'Hare (ORD) - London Heathrow | 719 | Oct 4 - 13, 2026 | 0 / 1 |
| 7 | San Francisco (SFO) - London Heathrow | 731 | Nov 6 - 9, 2026 | 1 / 2 |
| 8 | Los Angeles (LAX) - London Heathrow | 744 | Oct 12 - 14, 2026 | 1 / 1 |
| 9 | Seattle (SEA) - London Heathrow | 771 | Sep 28 - Oct 13, 2026 | 2 / 2 |
Stops are the hidden cost in several of these. The Newark and Seattle deals need two stops each way and the San Francisco deal two on the way back, so a cheap listing can mean a very long travel day. The Orlando and Chicago deals are the exceptions, with a nonstop outbound leg.1 Next: when to go.
Fares by month
The UK-wide medians below are the best guide to average flight prices to London by month, since London takes almost all flight searches to the UK. February is the cheapest month, with a median round trip of $3801, and January ($4001), October ($4051) and November ($4031) are close. June is the most expensive at $6351, 1.672 times February, followed by May at $5371.1
These are medians, a different statistic from the $8201 average: for each month, prices from the past year are ranked and the middle one is taken after the top 0.1% is removed. A median is less affected by expensive business-class fares, which is why every month sits below the average.1

- June costs $255 more than February.
Summer after June is cheaper than the peak suggests: July's median is $4601, August $4471 and September $4521, and December rises to $4781 for the holidays.1 The price calendar and the traffic calendar do not line up exactly, as the passenger data further down shows.
Which day, which time, how far ahead
Saturday is the most expensive day to fly, at $1,0201 on average for a round trip, while Wednesday departures can be found from $9161.1 By time of day, afternoon departures are the cheapest at $8101 and evening departures the dearest at $9931, $1832 more, even though evening departures make up 55%1 of nonstop listings to the UK (scheduled flight numbers listed on a fare-search site, including codeshares, not flights operated).1
- Afternoon is the cheapest at $810.
- Evening is the most expensive at $993.
- Evening costs $183 more than afternoon.
How far ahead to book is a noisier question. Averaged week by week over the past year, the lowest price came 261 weeks before departure, at $6711, and the highest 231 weeks out, at $8471. Booking in the final week averaged $7941, $1232 above the cheapest week, and booking about three weeks ahead saved about 7%1 against the last minute.1 The line jumps from week to week, so no single booking date is magic; the clear signal is that booking very early was cheapest.
- The lowest average, $671, is 26 weeks before departure.
- The highest, $847, is 23 weeks before.
- The final week averages $794.
How many flights leave for the UK each day
Airlines operated 94,7845 passenger flights between US and UK airports in 2025, counting both directions: about 2602 a day, or roughly 1302 a day each way. 445 US airports had scheduled flights to the UK.5 Fare-search pages show a much bigger number, about 7761 nonstop flights a day (scheduled flight numbers listed on a fare-search site, including codeshares, not flights operated): one plane often carries the flight numbers of several partner airlines, so it is counted several times.1
British Airways alone flew 33.2%2 of the operated flights.5 The schedule follows the seasons: August 2025 was the busiest month with 9,2905 flights and February the quietest with 6,0525; August had 1.542 times as many.5

New York JFK had the most flights, 18,1735, followed by Newark (7,3955), Boston (6,3965) and Los Angeles (6,3265); together JFK and Newark had 27.0%2 of all US-UK flights.5 More flights mean more choice of times, but not automatically lower fares: New York's past-month average was above the national one.
- New York JFK leads with 18,173 flights.
- Newark is second with 7,395.
- Orlando has 4,368.
The average flight time from New York to London
A nonstop from New York JFK to London Heathrow averages 6h 50m1, the same as Newark to Heathrow.1 British Airways schedules its BA178 from JFK to Heathrow at 6h 55m6.6 Real itineraries run a little longer: four nonstop JFK-Heathrow round trips listed for October 2026 to February 2027 had outbound legs of 7h 00m to 7h 15m, an average of about 7h 06m2.1
The shortest US-UK nonstops are all from the Northeast. Boston to Heathrow averages 6h 30m1, as does New York JFK to Edinburgh; Boston to Gatwick takes 6h 46m1.1 Across all nonstop routes from the US to the UK, including the long ones from the West Coast, the average flight takes 9h 31m1 and covers 4,0191 miles (6,4682 km).

The average flight time from London to New York
Going home takes longer. British Airways' return flight, BA177 from Heathrow to JFK, is scheduled at about 7h 55m6, an hour more than the eastbound flight; that westbound time comes from a published airline schedule read from a timetable site, not from the airline directly, so treat it as an estimate. The four nonstop itineraries listed for the coming months agree: their return legs took 8h 00m to 8h 10m, an average of 8h 05m2, about 592 minutes more than the same trips' outbound legs.1 The reason is the jet stream, which blows from west to east across the North Atlantic, a tailwind for flights to London and a headwind for flights back.

What's inside the ticket: duty, fees and airport charges
UK Air Passenger Duty
Every passenger flying out of a UK airport pays Air Passenger Duty, and the United States falls in distance Band B. From 1 April 2026, the rate now in force, an economy (reduced-rate) passenger pays £1027, about $137.272 at the 2026 average exchange rate; premium economy and business pay the standard rate of £2447 ($328.382).7 The duty is charged once, on the flight leaving the UK, so on a US round trip it falls on the way home.
The rates announced for 1 April 2027 are higher: £105.337 for economy and £251.957 for the standard rate.7 Their dollar values in the table, $141.752 and $339.072, are at the 2026 average exchange rate, the latest full rate available, because the 2027 rate is not yet known. The economy rise is £3.332, or 3.3%2.
| Reduced rate (economy) | 102 | 137.27 | 105.33 | 141.75 |
| Standard rate (premium economy, business) | 244 | 328.38 | 251.95 | 339.07 |
| Higher rate (larger private jets) | 1,097 | 1,476.34 | 1,132.76 | 1,524.47 |
US taxes and fees
The US side adds its own charges. The international departure tax and the international arrival tax are $23.409 each in 2026.9 The September 11th Security Fee is $5.6010 per one-way trip that starts at a US airport, so it is charged once, on the way out.10 On arrival back in the US come a customs fee of $7.3911,11 which rises to $7.6112 on October 1, 2026,12 an immigration fee of $7.001313 and an agricultural inspection fee of $3.8414, which rises to $3.9814 for tickets bought from October 1, 2026.14 Together these federal taxes and fees come to $70.632 on a round trip, and $70.992 from October 1, 2026, when both rises apply. The US departure airport also charges a passenger facility charge of up to $4.5015 per boarding;1516 a nonstop round trip has one US boarding, since the return starts abroad. With it, US government charges come to $75.132, or $75.492 from October 1, 2026.
| 1 | International departure tax (leaving the US) | 23.40 |
| 2 | International arrival tax (arriving in the US) | 23.40 |
| 3 | September 11th Security Fee (outbound trip from the US) | 5.60 |
| 4 | Customs user fee | 7.39 |
| 5 | Immigration user fee | 7.00 |
| 6 | Agricultural (APHIS) passenger fee | 3.84 |
| 7 | Airport passenger facility charge, up to $4.50 at the US departure airport | 4.50 |
Put the two countries together and an economy round trip carries $212.402 of government duty and fees, the UK duty ($137.272) plus the $75.132 of US government charges, or $212.762 from October 1, 2026. That equals 25.9%2 of the $8201 average fare and 55.9%2 of February's $3801 median, a fixed cost that no sale can remove. In premium economy or business, the UK duty alone is $328.382.
The Heathrow airport charge
Airports charge airlines too, and Heathrow's charges are capped by a price control set by the UK's aviation regulator. For 2026 the cap, the maximum allowable yield, is £26.22117 per passenger, about $35.292 at the 2026 average rate, down from a maximum revenue yield of £26.92717 per passenger in 2025 ($35.522 at the 2025 rate).17 The cap limits Heathrow's average revenue from airport charges per passenger; it is collected through three charges, 58%17 from the passenger charge, 37%17 from landing (movement) charges and 5%17 from parking.17
What a US-bound passenger triggers is higher than the average. Since 1 January 2026, the charge for each passenger departing Heathrow to a destination outside Europe (the Rest of World band, which includes the US) is £49.1017, about $66.082, or £29.4617 ($39.652) for a passenger changing planes at Heathrow.17 These charges are billed to the airline, separate from Air Passenger Duty, which is a government tax.
| Maximum allowable yield per passenger, 2026 (price-control cap) | 26.221 | 35.29 |
| Maximum revenue yield per passenger, 2025 | 26.927 | 35.52 |
| Departing passenger charge, Rest of World, origin and destination, 2026 | 49.100 | 66.08 |
| Departing passenger charge, Rest of World, transfer and transit, 2026 | 29.460 | 39.65 |
How the exchange rate moves the dollar price
Duty, airport charges and most spending in London are set in pounds, so the exchange rate decides what they cost in dollars. A pound cost $1.31928 on average in 2025 and $1.34588 so far in 2026, against $2.00208 in 2007, the strongest year for the pound since 1990.8 At the 2007 rate, £100 of London costs cost $200.202; at the 2025 rate, $131.922.
Projection: linear trend of 1990–2025 yearly values, 95% prediction range. Our calculation, not a forecast.
- The pound peaked at $2.0020 in 2007.
- 2025 averaged $1.3192.
- 1990 averaged $1.7841.
The long drift has been in the American traveler's favor: the 2025 rate is 65.9%2 of the 2007 one. The trend line, fitted to 1990-2025, keeps falling slowly, with a wide range around it; it is our calculation, not a forecast, and exchange rates can move sharply in a single year, as 2016 showed ($1.35558 after $1.52848 in 2015).8
How many people fly between the US and the UK
In 2025, 20.18 million3 passengers flew nonstop between US and UK airports, counting both directions and all nationalities. That is 92.9%2 of the all-time high of 21.71 million3 in 2019, and 2.0%2 below 2024's 20.59 million3.3 In 2021, with travel restrictions in place, the route carried only 2.83 million3, 13.0%2 of the 2019 level.
Over 36 years the route has doubled: 2019 carried 2.082 times the 10.43 million3 of 1990.3 The straight-line trend, fitted to 1990-2025 with the pandemic years 2020-2022 left out, keeps rising slowly to 2050; it is our calculation, not a forecast.
Projection: linear trend of 1990–2025 yearly values, 95% prediction range. Our calculation, not a forecast.
- The peak was 21,714,677 passengers in 2019.
- 2025 carried 20,176,377.
- 1990 carried 10,434,104.
By month
Traffic follows the vacation calendar. July 2025 was the busiest month with 2,123,9583 passengers, about 68,5152 a day, and February the quietest with 1,086,0723; July carried 1.962 times as many.3 February is also the cheapest month for fares, but June, not July, is the priciest: the fare peak comes a month before the traffic peak.1

Americans in the UK: a record year
US residents made 5.6 million4 visits to the UK in 2024, the most on record, and spent £7.3 billion4, about $9.33 billion2 at the 2024 average rate.4 Visits were 1.242 times the 2019 level and 2.052 times 2009's 2,72719 thousand.19 The 2024 figures come from a survey whose method changed, so the step from 2023 (5,12220 thousand) to 2024 is partly a change of measurement.20 No figure was published for 2020, and 2021 (66320 thousand) is left out of the line.
Projection: linear trend of 2009–2024 yearly values, 95% prediction range. Our calculation, not a forecast.
- 2024 set the record at 5,600 thousand visits.
- 2019 had 4,499 thousand.
- 2009 had 2,727 thousand.
Spending grew faster than visits. In dollars at each year's exchange rate, US visitors spent $3,230.9 million2 in 2009 and $9,330.1 million2 in 2024; the average visit in 2024 cost £1,3014, about $1,662.812, on top of the flight.4 Holidays made up 51%4 of visits and 58%4 of spending, with a record 2.9 million4 holiday visits, and about 30%4 of US visitors were 55 or older, against 23%4 for all overseas visitors.4

Where North American visitors go in Britain
Most visits by North American residents include London. Of their 6,44721 thousand visits to regions of Great Britain in 2024, 4,24421 thousand included London, 65.8%2; London also took 46.0%2 of their nights and 57.2%2 of their spending.21 A visit can include several regions, so the regional visits add up to more than the number of trips. The figures cover all North American residents, the closest regional breakdown published. US residents made 5,47521 thousand of the 6,44721 thousand North American visits to Great Britain in 2024, 84.9%2.21
- London had 4,244 thousand visits.
- Scotland had 1,076 thousand.
- The North East had 43 thousand.
Scotland is the clear second, with 1,07621 thousand visits and 1,46921 million pounds of spending, and its visitors stay longer: 7.62 nights per visit against 5.52 in London. The South East (76821 thousand), which surrounds Heathrow and Gatwick, comes third.21

What these numbers mean for your trip
For a traveler from the US, the calendar and the airport move the price more than timing the purchase to the day.1 A February trip at the $3801 median against a June one at $6351 saves $2552 per ticket, before duty and fees are counted.
Those charges are the part that does not move: $212.402 of UK duty and US government charges on every economy round trip ($212.762 from October 1, 2026), and more in premium cabins. The pound matters too: at $1.34588 per pound this year, the £1,3014 a typical US visitor spent in 2024 would cost more in dollars than it did at 2024's rate.
If time matters more than money, the shortest trips start in the Northeast, where Boston and New York nonstops reach London in well under seven hours; if money matters more, one-stop itineraries from the big gateways and nonstops into Gatwick carry the lowest prices in the listings, at the cost of a longer day.1
How the UK compares with other European destinations
Measured the same way, as the past-month average round trip from all US airports, the UK is one of the cheaper big European destinations. Italy averaged $93722,22 $1172 more than the UK, and France $89523;23 only Spain, at $74724, was cheaper.24
- Italy is the most expensive at $937.
- The UK averages $820.
- Spain is the cheapest at $747.
FAQ
When are flights from the US to London least expensive?
February, with a median round trip of $380 to the UK over the past year; June is the most expensive at $635.1
Is Gatwick or Heathrow cheaper to fly into from the US?
Why is the flight back from London longer?
Westbound flights fly into the jet stream. British Airways schedules JFK to Heathrow at 6h 55m and the return at about 7h 55m.6
Who pays UK Air Passenger Duty on a US round trip?
Every passenger departing a UK airport, so it is charged on the flight home: £102 in economy from 1 April 2026.7
Which UK airport handles the most flights from the US?
London Heathrow, with 17.39 million of the 20.18 million US-UK nonstop passengers in 2025.3
Conclusions
- London's price is the UK's price. With 98%1 of flight searches to the UK going to London, the $8201 UK average is the London average in practice; the airport choice inside London (Gatwick $2971, Heathrow $4791) moves the price more than the city does.
- The cheap season and the quiet season coincide. February has both the lowest median fare ($3801) and the fewest passengers (1,086,0723 in 2025), while the fare peak in June runs a month ahead of the traffic peak in July.
- The wind makes the round trip lopsided. Eastbound nonstops from New York average 6h 50m1; the westbound schedule is about an hour longer, and real return legs averaged 8h 05m2.
- A fixed slice of every ticket is set by governments, not airlines. In economy, $212.402 of UK duty and US government charges ($212.762 from October 1, 2026), 25.9%2 of the average fare, is charged whatever the sale price, and UK duty rises again in April 2027.
- Demand has recovered in visitors, not yet in nonstop passengers. US visits to the UK set a record in 2024 (5.6 million4), while nonstop passengers between the two countries in 2025 were still 92.9%2 of 2019.
Methodology
- Fares: prices seen up to September 27, 2026 (past month, past year or listing date, as labelled). Traffic: 1990-2025 yearly, 2025 monthly and by airport; flights operated 2025; Heathrow terminal passengers 2015-2025.
- Visitors: 2009-2024 (2020 not published); regions: Great Britain 2024 (Northern Ireland not covered). Taxes and charges: rates in force on September 27, 2026, plus UK duty announced for 1 April 2027.
Definition. Fares are average round-trip prices published on commercial fare-search route pages for flights from the United States to the United Kingdom (all US and UK airports unless named; cabin mix not stated). The UK-wide average covers the past month of prices (snapshot of September 27, 2026); monthly figures are medians over the past year after the top 0.1% of prices is removed; booking-week figures are averages; airport figures are averages from a separate set of prices. Route deals are single itineraries on the dates shown, not averages. Traffic counts are passengers on nonstop scheduled and charter flights between US and UK airports, both directions, all nationalities; the route table covers US airlines only. Flight counts are nonstop passenger flights operated (departures performed) between US and UK airports in 2025, both directions, all airlines, leaving out airlines that reported no passengers on an airport pair; they are not the flight numbers listed on fare-search pages, which count codeshares. Visits are overseas residents' visits to the UK from the International Passenger Survey; the regional table covers residents of North America in Great Britain.
Data sources. Commercial fare-search route pages (KAYAK, labelled commercial), fetched September 26-27, 2026; US Department of Transportation International Report passengers (T-100, 1990-2025) and departures (2025); UK Civil Aviation Authority UK Airport Data 2025; Heathrow Airport Limited 2026 airport charges decision; HM Revenue and Customs Air Passenger Duty rates; US federal tax and fee rates from the IRS, the TSA and APHIS regulations, CBP and the United States Code (2026); the passenger facility charge from 14 CFR 158 and the FAA PFC page; Office for National Statistics International Passenger Survey (2009-2024 editions) and VisitBritain's US market page; British Airways schedule as published by flightmapper.net; FRED DEXUSUK exchange rates.
Calculations. Pound amounts are converted to dollars at each year's average of the daily New York noon rate (own calculation); 2026 uses the January-September 2026 average of $1.3458, and the Air Passenger Duty rates announced for 1 April 2027 are also converted at this 2026 rate, the latest available. Shares, ratios and sums are our arithmetic. Trend lines on yearly charts are ordinary least-squares straight lines over the stated fit range, with 2020-2022 left out where noted, extended to 2050 with a 95% prediction range: our calculation, not a forecast.
Limitations. Commercial fare averages have no stated sample size or cabin mix and change daily; figures from different parts of the fare pages come from different sets of prices and are not like-for-like. The westbound British Airways schedule time was read from a timetable site, not from the airline, and is approximate. The US federal fee total counts the security fee once, on the one-way trip that starts in the US; the US charges add one passenger facility charge (one US boarding, nonstop); a connection at a US airport can add another. The 2024 visitor figures follow a change in survey method and are not strictly comparable with earlier years.
