How much is a flight to New York? Commercial fare-search prices put the average round trip from US cities at $3051 over the past 12 months, with January the cheapest month and July the dearest. Official ticket data measures it differently: on New York's busiest domestic routes, the average one-way fare was $271.862 in the first quarter of 2026, both directions and all three airports combined.2
Where you start matters more than anything else. A one-way ticket between Chicago and New York averaged $191.172 in early 2026, while San Francisco came in at $517.882. Below: fares by origin state and city, month, weekday and booking window, 30 years of route fares, the taxes built into every ticket, and how many people fly into JFK, LaGuardia and Newark.
The average price of a flight to New York in 2026
How much is a round-trip flight to New York?
Round trips to New York from US cities averaged $3051 in commercial fare-search prices over the past 12 months. That average covers every US departure city and all three New York airports; it does not state a cabin mix or a sample size, so treat it as a benchmark rather than a quote.1 A fare under $2061 is in the cheapest quarter of prices seen, $993 below the average, which makes it a fair test of a real deal.
The official record runs much further back. On the top domestic routes that touch New York, the passenger-weighted average one-way fare rose from $202.502 in 1996 to $252.012 in 2025, 1.243 times the 1996 level in current dollars. The low point was $176.392 in 2004, the high point $257.282 in 2014.2 Because each one-way fare counts a round trip as two trips, doubling the first-quarter 2026 average gives about $543.723 for a round trip. That is well above the search average: the official figure counts tickets actually sold, of every fare type, while the search figure averages prices travelers were shown.
Projection: linear trend of 1996–2025 yearly values, 95% prediction range. Our calculation, not a forecast.
- The 2025 average was $252.01.
- The lowest year was 2004 at $176.39.
- 2020 fell to $206.02.
A straight line through those 30 years (our calculation, not a forecast) reaches about $2573 by 2035 and $2813 by 2050 in current dollars. The pandemic dip is visible: $206.022 in 2020, then back to $240.012 by 2022. The 2025 average stood $14.743 above 2019.2

Average flight prices to New York by month
January is the cheapest month to fly to New York, at $2281 round trip on average, and July is the most expensive at $3661, with June close behind at $3641. July costs 60.5%3 more than January, a gap of $1383 per ticket.1
The day and hour matter less. Friday is the cheapest day to fly at $3161, Sunday the priciest at $3851; evening departures average $2991 and night flights $3501.

Booking early pays, up to a point. Fares are lowest about 5 weeks1 before departure, roughly 29%1 below the average last-minute fare; tickets bought within 2 weeks1 of the flight run 23%1 above the $3051 average, about $375.153.1
JFK, LaGuardia or Newark: what trips from each airport cost
Each airport's own fare record measures something different from the price of getting to New York: it is the average domestic itinerary fare for trips that start at that airport (a round-trip fare, or a one-way fare when no return was bought), across every destination, from a 10% sample of tickets. In the second quarter of 2026, trips starting at JFK averaged $497.234, at Newark $495.844 and at LaGuardia $404.234.4 Because the figures cover every destination, they partly reflect where each airport's flights go, not only what airlines charge. JFK trips cost $93.003 more than LaGuardia trips and only $1.393 more than Newark trips.
Over 13 years, trips starting at the three airports took different paths. JFK's yearly average rose 3.5%3 from 2013 to 2025, LaGuardia's fell 3.6%3 and Newark's fell 12.8%3, from $487.504 to $424.884, all in current dollars.4
- JFK
- LaGuardia
- Newark
- JFK trips averaged $431.32 in 2025.
- Newark trips fell from $487.50 in 2013 to $424.88.
- All three dropped in 2020.
Taxes and fees on a ticket to New York
Part of every fare is fixed by law, and the advertised price already includes it. The federal domestic ticket tax is 7.5%5 of the base fare and the flight segment tax $5.305 per segment, one takeoff and landing, in 2026.5 The September 11th security fee is $5.606 per one-way trip that starts at a US airport, connections included, so a round trip within the US pays it twice, $11.206, the round-trip cap.6 JFK, LaGuardia and Newark all collect the maximum passenger facility charge of $4.507 per boarding,7 the federal cap.8
Backing those charges out of a $3051 nonstop round trip, and assuming the departure airport also charges $4.50, leaves a base fare of about $255.073. The ticket tax on it is $19.133, so about $49.933, or 16.4%3, of the $305 price is taxes and fees. A one-stop trip pays the segment tax and the facility charge twice each way: of the same $305, about $68.163, 22.3%3, is taxes and fees.

How many people fly into New York
JFK, Newark and LaGuardia together handled 142.4 million3 passengers in 2025, domestic and international, both directions. That is below the 2024 total of 145.8 million3 but above 2019's 139.9 million3.11 Adding Stewart airport, the region counted 142.7 million11 passengers, its third-busiest year ever; Newark lost volume to runway rehabilitation and air-traffic-control staffing limits.11
Projection: linear trend of 2012–2025 yearly values, 95% prediction range. Our calculation, not a forecast.
- 2025 had 142,420,590 passengers.
- 2024 was the peak at 145,795,119.
A straight line through the non-pandemic years (our calculation, not a forecast) reaches about 177.1 million3 passengers by 2035 and 218.2 million3 by 2050. Runway and terminal capacity is a real limit that a straight line ignores.
Domestic and international travelers by airport
The three airports serve different markets. LaGuardia is almost entirely domestic: only 5.0%3 of its 32,791,05011 passengers in 2025 were international. At Newark the share was 32.7%3, and at JFK 55.1%3, the only one of the three with more international than domestic travelers.11 LaGuardia is the closest to downtown at 7.6 miles1, JFK the farthest at 12.9 miles1; a shuttle bus between airports costs about $101 and takes 30 minutes or more.1

- United carried 34,679,248 passengers.
- Delta was a close second with 34,489,046.
What these numbers mean for your trip
For a family of four, the calendar alone is worth real money: four round trips at the $3051 average come to $1,2203, four at January's $2281 to $9123, a difference of $3083. About $49.933 of each $305 nonstop ticket, $199.723 for the family, is taxes and fees that no sale removes.
Geography sets the rest. From California the average one-way fare is more than double that from Illinois, so travelers in the West pay most.2 On the Los Angeles route, a one-stop routing via Columbus saved $1563 against a nonstop over the past three months.10 From the East and the Midwest, the season matters most.
The cheapest combination on this page stacks the patterns: a January trip, booked about five weeks ahead, flying on a Friday.1 Summer adds more than price: delays peak then too.
How New York's airports compare with other busy US airports
Measured the same way, as the average fare for domestic trips starting at each airport in the second quarter of 2026, JFK ($497.234) and Newark ($495.844) sit close to Los Angeles ($499.604) and Dallas/Fort Worth ($496.054). LaGuardia, at $404.234, is close to Chicago O'Hare ($403.204).4
- San Francisco is the highest at $521.06.
- Orlando is the lowest at $329.09.

Definition. Round-trip fares are average prices seen on commercial fare-search route pages for flights from US departure cities to New York (JFK, LaGuardia, Newark), past 12 months unless a shorter window is stated; cabin mix and sample size are not published. Route fares are official average one-way market fares for the top 1,000 US city-pair markets in the contiguous states (10% ticket sample), both directions, with New York's three airports combined into one market. Airport fares are the official average domestic itinerary fare for trips that start at each airport (round-trip fare, or one-way fare when no return was bought), all destinations; they describe trips leaving New York, not the price of flying there. Passenger counts are airport-operator totals of arriving and departing passengers; route passenger figures are average passengers per day, both directions. Route markets are metro areas: Miami includes Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles the other Los Angeles-area airports and Washington, DC includes Baltimore/Washington (BWI). Flight counts are domestic passenger flights operated (departures performed) into JFK, LaGuardia and Newark in 2025, all airlines, leaving out airlines that reported no passengers on a route; flight length is the average gate-to-gate time. Departure-time shares are flight numbers listed on fare-search pages, including codeshares, not flights operated.
Data sources. US DOT Consumer Airfare Report, Table 1 (1996 to first quarter 2026); US DOT Bureau of Transportation Statistics average domestic itinerary fares by origin airport (2013-2025 and second quarter 2026); Port Authority of New York and New Jersey 2025 Annual Airport Traffic Report and PFC filing; US DOT Bureau of Transportation Statistics T-100 Domestic Segment (all carriers, 2025); tax and fee rates from IRS Publication 510, 49 CFR 1510 (TSA) and the FAA PFC program; commercial fare-search route pages (KAYAK, labelled commercial), fetched September 27, 2026.
Calculations. State and yearly fares are passenger-weighted averages of the city-pair fares: sum of fare x passengers divided by the sum of passengers. The average distance is weighted the same way. Taxes use 2026 statutory rates, backed out of the tax-inclusive $305 average price: base fare = ($305 - fixed per-trip charges) / 1.075. Trend lines are ordinary least-squares straight lines over the stated fit range, extended to 2050 with a 95% prediction range: our calculation, not a forecast.
Limitations. Commercial averages change daily and different commercial figures use different windows, so they are not subtracted from each other. Route fares are one-way and the set of top markets changes from quarter to quarter; first-quarter fares carry winter seasonality. Official fares cover the contiguous states only (no Hawaii or Alaska). Premium-cabin fares are not shown separately.

About the author
Helen Askew writes the publication's aviation coverage, from airline reliability rankings to fare and fee analysis. She flew for 21 years as a commercial pilot, the last eight as a captain on wide-body long-haul routes, accumulating more than 12,000 flight hours on both major narrow-body and wide-body aircraft families. Off the flight deck, Helen served as Head of Flight Safety for a major European carrier, where she ran the airline's safety-management system, led incident investigations and represented the company in working groups with national and regional aviation regulators. She holds a master's degree in air transport management and is a fellow of a leading aeronautical professional society. Her writing draws on primary data (regulator filings, operational performance reports and airline financial disclosures) rather than press releases. She is regularly quoted by trade and consumer media on airline safety, cancellations and passenger rights.
