What a flight to New Zealand costs in 2026
The average of $1,1681 covers round trips from any US airport to any New Zealand airport over the past month. It is a snapshot of late September 2026, not a quote.1 For a round-trip flight to New Zealand, the calendar matters a great deal. Here are New Zealand flight prices by month, cheapest first: February $6131, December $9181 and July $1,0101. These are medians over the past 12 months, so they sit below the one-month average, and July's median is 1.652 times February's, a gap of $3972 per ticket.1
By season, fares in August drop by about 5%1 on average, and fares in December, the southern summer, rise by about 29%1 on average.1 Round trips departing on a Tuesday can be found from $1,1481, while Friday departures average $1,3001; the first is a low price and the second an average, so the two are not a like-for-like gap.1
| February (cheapest month) | 12-month median | 613 |
| December | 12-month median | 918 |
| July (priciest month) | 12-month median | 1,010 |
| Tuesday (cheapest weekday) | from (lowest price) | 1,148 |
| Friday (priciest weekday) | average | 1,300 |
| Night departures | average | 984 |
Booking early pays, up to a point. Tickets bought about two weeks ahead cost about 23%1 less than last-minute ones, and the very lowest fares tend to appear about 12 weeks before departure.1 The cheapest round trip seen in the two weeks to September 27 was $4201, Los Angeles to Auckland, and the cheapest one-way ticket seen in 72 hours was $3691.1 Those are floor prices that last for hours, not days; the average is the better budget.
How much is a flight to Auckland or Queenstown?
Where you land changes the price. A flight to Auckland, New Zealand has an average price of $8141, and the cheapest round trip on offer in the last five days of prices started at $5601; all of these prices are for return tickets.1 Christchurch started at $6761 and Wellington at $9011. What the fare costs from your US airport
The departure city moves the price as much as the month. Over the past 12 months a round trip to Auckland averaged $7994 from Los Angeles4, $8645 from Dallas/Fort Worth5 and $9476 from Honolulu.6 The other three nonstop gateways cost more: San Francisco $1,27377, New York JFK $1,32588 and Houston $1,5279, $7282 more than Los Angeles.9 A nonstop from your own city is no guarantee of a low fare: Houston has one and still costs more than a connection from most states on the map below.9
- Houston is the most expensive at $1,527.
- Los Angeles is the cheapest at $799.
- Houston costs $728 more than Los Angeles.
Across the country the spread is wide. The 422 state airports with a route page to Auckland had a median 12-month average of $1,2082, and 212 of them averaged less than that.1 The cheapest was Los Angeles at $79944 and the most expensive Providence at $1,92510, 2.412 times as much.10 The map shows one major airport per state; the table below it gives each airport's usual price band.
- Rhode Island is the most expensive at $1,925.
- California is the cheapest at $799.
Averages hide how far prices move on each route. From Los Angeles, most round trips to Auckland over the past 12 months fell between $6764 and $1,0814, a band of $4052.4 From Providence the usual band ran from $1,66410 to $2,38410.10 Anything below the low end of your own airport's band is a good price for that route.

How long the flight to New Zealand takes
There is no short way to New Zealand from the mainland US. Official traffic records give the average gate-to-gate time of every nonstop flown by the US airlines on the route. In 2025 the Los Angeles-Auckland flight averaged 13 h 6 min3 westbound and 12 h 5 min3 on the way back, a difference of 612 minutes.3 San Francisco-Auckland took almost exactly the same, 13 h 7 min3 and 12 h 7 min3, and Dallas/Fort Worth-Auckland 14 h 56 min3 westbound.3
So the average flight time to New Zealand depends on the gateway: about 9 hours from Hawaii (9 h 6 min3 from Honolulu), about 13 hours nonstop from California, 15 from Texas, and longer from anywhere that needs a domestic connection first.3 Every route is slower toward New Zealand than back to the US. New York JFK and Houston are flown only by airlines that do not file flight times, so the table leaves them out; at 8,8143 miles, New York JFK-Auckland is the longest regular route.3

Flights within New Zealand and from Australia
Most trips add a domestic flight, and those are cheap by comparison. A flight from Auckland to Queenstown, the gateway to the Southern Alps, averaged $15148 round trip over the past 12 months, with most fares between $11648 and $21948.48 A flight from Auckland to Wellington averaged $1164949, and the return direction, Wellington to Auckland, $11750; the capital run is $352 cheaper than Queenstown.50
Many visitors combine New Zealand with Australia. A flight from Australia to New Zealand on the busiest route, Sydney to Auckland, averaged $40451 round trip, with a usual range of $34251 to $50351.51 Sydney is also the third most common last stop for US visitors on their way to New Zealand, after Los Angeles and San Francisco.52
- Sydney to Auckland is the most expensive at $404.
- Auckland to Wellington is the cheapest at $116.
- Auckland to Queenstown costs $35 more than Auckland to Wellington.
Domestic fares move in a narrower band. Most Auckland-Wellington round trips cost between $9049 and $1644949, while Sydney-Auckland fares spread over $1612, from $34251 to $50351.51

Passengers, seats and flights since 1990
Nonstop flights between the US and New Zealand carried 1,053,7543 passengers in the 12 months to June 2026 (July 2025-June 2026), both directions and all nationalities combined; 513,8983 of them were flying to New Zealand.3 We use the latest 12 months rather than calendar 2025 because Air New Zealand's filing for June 2025 shows 5063 departures and 120,6663 passengers, about twice its usual month (June 2024: 2563 departures), which would inflate the 2025 totals.3
Compared like with like, the latest 12 months carried 93.5%2 of the 1,127,4733 passengers of July 2018-June 2019, 7.6%2 fewer than the 1,140,1063 of July 2023-June 2024, the busiest July-June period on record, and 50.3%2 more than in July 1990-June 1991.3 The pandemic cut the route to 33,3073 passengers in calendar 2021, when New Zealand's border was closed to most visitors.3
For a quarter of a century the route barely grew. Traffic hovered between about 0.67 million3 (2012) and 0.90 million3 (2004) until 2015, then jumped to 1.00 million3 in 2016, when Houston joined the network, and has stayed above a million in every normal year since.3
Projection: linear trend of 1990–2024 yearly values, 95% prediction range. Our calculation, not a forecast.
- The record was 1,135,804 passengers in 2019.
- 2024 reached 1,098,768.
- The low outside the pandemic was 665,632 in 2012.
A straight-line trend through the calendar years 1990-2024, with the pandemic years 2020-2022 left out, reaches about 1.13 million2 passengers by 2035 and 1.29 million2 by 2050, inside a wide range. That is our calculation, not a forecast: it assumes the long-run pace of the past 35 years simply continues.
How full the flights are
Airlines offered 1,352,9823 seats on the route in the 12 months to June 2026, 3.7%2 fewer than in July 2018-June 2019 and 15.2%2 fewer than in July 2023-June 2024, the record period for seats.3 Passengers filled 77.9%2 of them, up from 71.4%2 in July 2023-June 2024 but below the 80.2%2 of July 2018-June 2019; the calendar-year peak was 84.4%2 in 2013.3 That left 299,2282 empty seats over the 12 months. In the early 1990s the planes flew barely half full: 53.8%2 in 1991.3
Projection: linear trend of 1990–2024 yearly values, 95% prediction range. Our calculation, not a forecast.
- 2024 set the record with 1,482,019 seats.
- 2019 offered 1,407,304.
- The low was 797,896 in 2012.
Seats grew faster than passengers after the reopening. In 2024 airlines offered so many seats that only 74.1%2 were filled, the lowest share outside the pandemic years since 1997, when it was 73.7%2.3 Before the pandemic the route ran fuller: above 80%2 in every year from 2010 to 2017.3
| 2010 | 80.4 | 332.1 | 267.0 |
| 2011 | 80.6 | 305.5 | 246.2 |

The seat and trend figures come with the same caveat: a straight line through 1990-2024 without 2020-2022 reaches about 1.27 million2 seats by 2035 and 1.36 million2 by 2050, our calculation, not a forecast.
The number of flights has grown faster than the number of passengers. Airlines flew 4,7783 nonstop passenger flights between the two countries in the 12 months to June 2026, about 13.12 a day in both directions and 7.7%2 more than in July 2018-June 2019.3 Each flight carried 220.52 passengers on average, down from 254.22 in July 2018-June 2019, because the newer routes use smaller planes: seats per flight fell from 316.92 to 283.22.3
Projection: linear trend of 1990–2024 yearly values, 95% prediction range. Our calculation, not a forecast.
- 2024 had 4,962 flights, the most of any calendar year shown.
- 2019 had 4,453.
- The low was 2,458 in 1996.
The same trend method gives about 4,5352 flights a year by 2035 and 5,2192 by 2050; again our calculation, not a forecast.
The busiest months
Traffic follows the southern seasons. In 2024 the route was busiest in December, with 139,2763 passengers, and January, with 135,1433, and quietest in August, with 60,3233.3 December was also the busiest month in 2023, with 136,3323 passengers, and January in 2019, with 124,8123. The busy southern summer does not mean the highest fares: February has the lowest median fare of the year, and July the highest.1

- 2023
- 2024
- December 2024 had 139,276 passengers.

How Americans fly into New Zealand
Almost every American visitor arrives by plane. Of the visitors from the United States counted at the border in 2025, 94.6%2 landed at an airport and the rest came by sea; Auckland airport alone took 78.7%2.52 Queenstown airport received 29,44252 US visitors, 32.8%2 more than in 2023, and Christchurch 25,30352.52 These are visitors whose home is the US, whatever their passport, and a person who visits twice is counted twice.

| 2 | Queenstown airport | 22,176 | 25,755 | 29,442 |
| 3 | Christchurch airport | 18,203 | 23,037 | 25,303 |
| 4 | Wellington airport | 8,453 | 6,828 | 6,650 |
| 5 | Seaports | 15,149 | 14,106 | 20,584 |
The last flight before New Zealand is usually from the US. Los Angeles was the last port of flight for 89,59552 US visitors in 2025 and San Francisco for 62,89652, but Sydney came third with 56,19852: many Americans combine the trip with Australia. Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane together account for 24.2%2 of US visitor arrivals, and Nadi in Fiji for 20,18152.52
- Los Angeles leads with 89,595 visitors.
- Sydney had 56,198.
- New York had 10,045.
In total, visitor arrivals from the United States reached 384,87553 in 2025, the highest calendar-year total since at least 2013 and 4.6%2 above 2019.53 Before the pandemic the number climbed 82.7%2 in six years, from 201,42454 in 2013 to 367,95855 in 2019.54 55 Then the border closed: US arrivals fell to 5,15356 in 2021, only 1.4%2 of the 2019 level.56
Projection: linear trend of 2013–2025 yearly values, 95% prediction range. Our calculation, not a forecast.
- 2025 was the highest at 384,875.
- 2013 was the lowest at 201,424.
- 2019 had 367,958.
The straight-line trend of 2013-2025, without 2020-2022, points to about 531,5442 US arrivals by 2035 and 731,8792 by 2050. It is our calculation, not a forecast, and it rests on only ten years of data, most of them from the fast pre-pandemic climb.
Taxes and fees on a flight to New Zealand
A round-trip ticket between the US and New Zealand carries $91.812 in government charges per adult, about 7.9%2 of the average fare. The US side adds $75.132: $70.632 in federal taxes and fees plus a passenger facility charge of up to $4.5057 at the US departure airport, one US boarding on a nonstop round trip since the return starts abroad.5758 The international departure tax and the international arrival tax are $23.4059 each in 2026.59 The September 11 Security Fee is $5.6060 per one-way trip that starts at a US airport, so a round trip from the US pays it once, on the way out.60 On the return come a customs fee of $7.396161 62, which rises to $7.6163 on October 1, 2026,63 an immigration inspection fee of $7.006464 and an agricultural inspection fee of $3.8465, which rises to $3.9865 for tickets bought from October 1, 2026.65 With both rises, the federal taxes and fees come to $70.992, the US charges including the passenger facility charge to $75.492 and the ticket total to $92.172.
New Zealand adds two border processing levies to the ticket: NZ$25.0766 on arrival and NZ$3.6266 on departure, about $16.682 together.66 They are published exclusive of any applicable GST, and the published rates do not say whether GST is added for international air passengers, so the table shows the rates as published.66
| 1 | International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy | New Zealand | once, valid up to 2 years | 58.14 | no change |
| 2 | International departure tax (US) | United States | in the ticket | 23.40 | no change |
| 3 | International arrival tax (US) | United States | in the ticket | 23.40 | no change |
| 4 | Border processing levy on arrival (New Zealand) | New Zealand | in the ticket | 14.57 | no change |
| 5 | New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (app) | New Zealand | once, valid up to 2 years | 9.88 | no change |
| 6 | Customs passenger arrival fee (US) | United States | in the ticket | 7.39 | $7.61 |
| 7 | Immigration inspection fee (US) | United States | in the ticket | 7.00 | no change |
| 8 | September 11 Security Fee (once, on the trip out of the US) | United States | in the ticket | 5.60 | no change |
| 9 | Airport passenger facility charge, up to $4.50 at the US departure airport | United States | in the ticket | 4.50 | no change |
| 10 | Agricultural inspection fee (US) | United States | in the ticket | 3.84 | $3.98 |
| 11 | Border processing levy on departure (New Zealand) | New Zealand | in the ticket | 2.10 | no change |
Two more New Zealand charges are not part of the ticket. Visitors from the US need an electronic travel authority, NZ$1767 in the app, and pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy of NZ$10067 with it, about $68.022 together.67 Both are paid once, before the first trip, and the travel authority is valid for up to two years and several trips, so they are not a per-ticket charge; New Zealand and Australian citizens do not pay them.67
What these numbers mean for your trip
For a family of four, timing alone is worth real money. Four tickets at the February median come to $2,4522, four at the July median to $4,0402, a difference of $1,5882 before anyone has left home.1 Of each ticket, about $91.812 per person is government charges that no sale can remove, $367.242 for the family ($92.172 and $368.682 from October 1, 2026), plus $272.082 for four travel authorities and visitor levies if nobody has a valid one yet.
The route map sets the rest. Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and Houston carried 85.7%2 of the nonstop passengers in the 12 months to June 20263, and Los Angeles has the lowest 12-month average fare to Auckland of any US airport shown here.4 Travelers from anywhere else pay for a domestic connection in time and usually in money. Once in Auckland, a domestic flight to Queenstown or Wellington costs a fraction of the long-haul fare.48 With planes 77.9%2 full on average, there are seats to sell in most months, and the fare data point to February, not the quiet winter, as the cheapest time to go.3 1
New Zealand compared with other long-haul destinations
Measured the same way, over the past month, New Zealand is one of the dearer long-haul trips from the US. Its $1,1681 average sits $1782 above Australia and $2062 above Japan; only Israel, among the destinations shown, costs more, by $642.1 69 70 71
- Israel is the most expensive at $1,232.
- New Zealand averages $1,168.
- South Korea is the cheapest shown at $711.

Conclusions
- The month you fly moves the fare by hundreds of dollars. July's median round trip ($1,0101) is 1.652 times February's ($6131).
- One airport does almost all the work. Auckland handled 98.2%2 of nonstop US-New Zealand passengers in the 12 months to June 2026 and has the lowest fares from the US.1
- Your departure city can more than double the fare. The 12-month average to Auckland ran from $7994 from Los Angeles to $1,92510 from Providence.
- More, smaller flights. Flights rose 7.7%2 from July 2018-June 2019 to July 2025-June 2026, New York and Dallas/Fort Worth joined the map, and each flight carries about 220.52 passengers instead of 254.22.
- About $91.812 per ticket is not negotiable, $92.172 from October 1, 2026. Government charges built into the ticket are 7.9%2 of the average fare; the travel authority and visitor levy come on top, once every two years at most.
- Americans fly in, mostly via California. 94.6%2 of US visitors landed at an airport in 2025, and Los Angeles and San Francisco were the last stop for the largest groups.52
Methodology
- Fares: prices seen up to September 27, 2026; four New Zealand arrival airports; 44 US departure airports in 42 states; four domestic and trans-Tasman routes; six destinations in the comparison. The map shows the 42 states whose main airport has a route page to Auckland with a 12-month average.
- Traffic: calendar years 1990-2024 and the latest 12 months (July 2025-June 2026); monthly detail for 2019, 2023 and 2024. Visitor arrivals: 2013-2025; ports 2023-2025.
Definition. Fares are round-trip prices on commercial fare-search route pages for flights from the United States to New Zealand (all US departure airports unless a city is named; cabin mix not stated). The New Zealand-wide average covers the past month (snapshot of September 27, 2026); monthly figures are 12-month medians with the top 0.1% of prices removed; departure-airport, domestic and Sydney-Auckland figures are 12-month averages and usual ranges; arrival-airport figures are the cheapest round trips seen in the last five days; the night figure covers the last two weeks and the weekday figures carry no stated period. These are different statistics and are never subtracted from each other. Traffic counts are passengers, seats and departures on nonstop scheduled and charter flights between US airports and New Zealand airports, both directions, all nationalities; a traveler who connects in Los Angeles is counted once, on the nonstop leg. The headline traffic period is the latest 12 months, July 2025-June 2026, compared with the same July-June months of earlier years; yearly lines use calendar years to 2024. Load factor is passengers divided by seats on passenger aircraft. Flight times are average ramp-to-ramp (gate-to-gate) minutes per flight. Visitor arrivals count overseas visitors by country of last permanent residence, calendar years, by port of arrival and last port of flight.
Data sources. Commercial fare-search route pages (KAYAK, labelled commercial), one page per route, fetched September 25-27, 2026; US Department of Transportation T-100 International Segment, all carriers, January 1990 to June 2026; Stats NZ international travel releases for December 2017, 2019, 2022 and 2025 and the December 2025 international visitor arrivals workbook; tax and fee rates from IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32, 49 CFR 1510.5, 19 CFR 24.22 with CBP Dec. 25-10 and CBP Dec. 26-14, 8 U.S.C. 1356(d), 7 CFR 354.3, 14 CFR 158 and the FAA PFC page, Immigration New Zealand and the New Zealand Customs Service; World Bank official exchange rate for the conversion.
Calculations. Shares, changes, load factors, seats and passengers per flight and currency conversions are our arithmetic. New Zealand dollar fees are converted at the 2025 annual average rate (1 USD = 1.7201 NZD), the latest complete year. Trend lines on yearly charts are ordinary least-squares straight lines over the stated fit range (1990-2024 for traffic, 2013-2025 for US arrivals, both without 2020-2022), extended to 2050 with a 95% prediction range: our calculation, not a forecast.
Limitations. Commercial fare averages have no stated sample size or cabin mix and change daily. No official US-New Zealand fare series exists. Total travel times from Florida or other cities without a nonstop are not shown, because no airline timetable for the domestic leg could be confirmed. Flight times cover only the airlines that report them. Air New Zealand's June 2025 traffic filing shows about twice its usual monthly departures and passengers (506 and 120,666, against 256 and 63,083 in June 2024), so calendar 2025 totals are not used: traffic figures use the latest 12 months, July 2025-June 2026, and the yearly lines end at 2024. Visitor arrivals count residence, not citizenship, and are not passenger counts; the port table lists only ports with 500 or more arrivals, and 182 arrivals from the US in 2025 were at other ports. Tax rates are those in force on September 27, 2026, with the October 1, 2026 changes shown.

About the author
Helen Askew writes the publication's aviation coverage, from airline reliability rankings to fare and fee analysis. She flew for 21 years as a commercial pilot, the last eight as a captain on wide-body long-haul routes, accumulating more than 12,000 flight hours on both major narrow-body and wide-body aircraft families. Off the flight deck, Helen served as Head of Flight Safety for a major European carrier, where she ran the airline's safety-management system, led incident investigations and represented the company in working groups with national and regional aviation regulators. She holds a master's degree in air transport management and is a fellow of a leading aeronautical professional society. Her writing draws on primary data (regulator filings, operational performance reports and airline financial disclosures) rather than press releases. She is regularly quoted by trade and consumer media on airline safety, cancellations and passenger rights.
